EErrr.. It's one of those macho cultural things. Most of Latin America was crazy like that for awhile but things are getting better there.
As the article states, it's even in their music. Some of the music that makes it over here to the states are by artists that have been known to say some really homophobic things. It's funny though because some of the music is still played at gay and lesbian bars. I'm on the fence about that because I don't like to support those artists although it would probably kill the artist to see a bunch or gays and lesbians dancing to their music. HAHA!!

And there's always something to be said about someone that shows so much hatred towards something or someone. This is proven time and time again. You would probably be surprised that probably a high percentage of men in Jamaica probably have sexual contact with other men "on the downlow" more than anyone there would admit. In a culture like that it is always considered ok (though not spoken of) to receive certain sexual acts as long as you're not the one doing it. This can actually be very dangerous and lead to the spread of more diseases as the people are not properly educated.

No real comment on the Jamaican homophobia thing. I hadn't heard about it, but it certainly doesn't come as a big surprise anyone who doesn't unduly romanticize the rasta culture. It's not like logic or love or modern thinking dictated the evolution of rasta.

I just recently noticed that reggae music has a real misogynistic, or at least old-school sexist bent to it.

Sounds like they need to be educated; but religious beliefs are hard to remove.

Amen to that. I had an idiot white friend w/ dreads that went to jamaica w/ the intent of feeling the "one love". Within an hr. of being off the plane, he was beaten and called all sorts of racist names for "whitey", had his clothing stolen and then got arrested for indecent exopsure

Well, goodness gracious. I would think all that weed smokin' would mellow them too much to be beating anyone up for anything. I don't understand homo phobia. I detest it.
