Is gambling fun and enjoyable to you? If it is, its bad. If you don't enjoy it but do it anyway, then you should be concerned about the neighbors and innocent ones that might observe you. It seems to me gambling would cut into time you could be at the meeting or out spreading the good news of the kingdom. "These are really urgent times we are living in." You could gamble on believing that line.

Gambling isn't the actual offense you will be charged with.

2 Corinthians 7:1; Colossians 3:5; Ephesians 4:19. Covetousness, Greediness, and a defilement of the flesh is what the offender will be counsoled on since "gambling" isn't actually mentioned in the scriptures. Because you covet what is not yours, you are displaying uncleanness with greediness for money, and gambling has known addiction issues and therefore is a defilement.

Neither were we - this only emphasised the JW non community spirit when we were at school and the billage raffle was to raise money for schools. gyms etc. I had to tell people it was because gambling is not allowed (although I cannot recall or think of any scriptural basis for this - although I believe it falls under the category of greed/idolatry).

I can remember when the National Lottery started in the UK in the mid 1990's, some jws in our hall wanted to know what the wts stance was on it. They were told if they played it they would be disciplined if they were found out, and df'd if they persisted in playing. As far as I know, gambling of any form is a df'ing offence.

Ya, but if I win, then it IS mine, so it ain't "covetousness". And I've never heard of any Dub getting the Axe for being 'greedy' or 'covetousness'. It so, most of the sisters would be axed for coveting each others homes, money in the bank or husband.

and gambling has known addiction issues and therefore is a defilement.

So does drinking alcohol, but they allow that. Once again, the Society's reasoning on banning something that's not mentioned in the bible, doesn't hold up under scrutiny.

They invest in the stock market, which is a gamble and a risk with other peoples money ( rank and file's donations). Yes, you can be disfellowedshipped. Texas Hold Em, go get em!

They pick and choose their rules.

"Greedy ones will not inherit the kingdom." So if you covet and try to take other's money this way, you're out of the JW's.

But if you run pyramid schemes or hire other "brothers" at exploitative wages, you can stay in the JW's.

And if you covet your neighbor's nice homes as you go door to door, selecting which one you might take after Armageddon destroys all non-JW's, then of course you can stay in the JW's.

Awake! 1994 August 8 p.15 Is Gambling for Christians? What if a person is offered a free lottery ticket or free money to use for gambling? In either case, accepting such an offer would still be supporting a gambling operation—an operation out of harmony with godly principles.

    Interesting.

In my congregation it was always taken that as long as you made no financial outlay it was OK. I knew of a JW who would accept a Lottery ticket off his non-JW brother.
