A sin against the Holy Spirit...

Can someone explain just exactly what that DOES mean. I was never able to get a straight answer from anyone--it was just some sort of horrible thing a person might do that would never, ever be forgiven. I asked point blank once if it was Apostasy and was told no. Then, just what the heck is it??? I've been out for a long time so I thought someone might have some "new light" haha.

No offense intended, but stuff like the unforgivable sin and eternal punishment are tools that cults use to keep their members in control. The fact that they come from a source as respected as the Bible, just kind of makes you wonder whether it deserves the respect it enjoys....

The sin against the Holy Spirit was simple. It was attributing the miracles Jesus performed to Satan, as the Jewish religious leaders did, and I don't rcall the verse. It only happened at that time, and not again. Though there are some Funny-mentalists that believe a Christian can do this sort of thing. I am not of that opinion.

Not sure why I would be offended...I'm truly curious. When I was a JW this was always being spouted as to something we all had to watch out for in case we might do it, but that was a long time ago. Maybe they take it more literally now as something only the pharisees did back in Jesus' day.

I no longer believe in the traditional version of God, I'm pretty much an agnostic, and I consider the bible a book full of violence and fear. The kind and good parts are too few and far between, no offense intended towards the still-Christian folk here.

One of my brothers and my Mom are still dubs however I can't really get into a doctrinal conversation with them since they will either 1) Think I'm interested in coming back in; 2) Discover my true feelings about their assinine religion and shun me completely for being a Satanic Apostate.

A forgiveness refused - a way of being - preferring an alternate way or "word" to that which you know to plainly be true

It is said the pharisees committed the sin - likely because they saw it with their very eyes, collectively, and refused it as true

Whosoever "speaks a word" - it's not like f@$k or something - a word is like your "husband", head of your house - you ("though I was their husband" says the Lord) - your word is your way of communicating, with yourself even, controlling how you act and think

Evidently, it's right up there with apostasy in the WTS "eyes". Probably IS apostasy..

ie: It's the JW "boogeyman" and shares that position with being disfellowshipped.

There are several opinions about that one . To a j-dub it is apparently to say the WTBTS does not have the truth , now that could get you df'd . According to the parables that jesus spoke of, you could be condemned if you received the holy spirit and did not make an effort to preach the message of the kingdom and convert people , thus conquering the world .The apostles spoke about the son of destruction being people that didn't hold on to the truth that the apostles were spreading so they are therefor awaiting the resurrection to judgement when they die.The apostle John spoke of people that didn't believe that christ was the messiah being condemned and anti christ . Then there is the one where people accused jesus of being in league with the devil . Satan got in trouble when he called God a liar and misled adam and eve . Maybe it's one of these things maybe it's all of these things . It's not very specific.

    Threestars:

First of all, it couldn't be "apostasy" because I was an apostate when I left the catholic church. (Every religion uses the word "apostasy" - the JWs didn't invent it - and, every religion is presumptuous enough to think they have "truth"- well, maybe not as much as JWs).

From what I remember, sinning agains the holy spirit was if somebody directly opposed God. For instance, Adam and Eve directly sinned against God so they sinned against the holy spirit. Judas Iscariot supposedly sinned against the holy spirit when he betrayed Jesus. So, it has to be something like this.

It could be manifesting extra-ordinary wickedness as happened with the Pharisees who continued to persecute and accuse Jesus despite the obvious kind works he was performing.
