I love the Sopranos. I can't wait for the new/last season. It will be bitter sweet. Definitely rent/buy the DVDs. Love Big Love too!!!! HBO has been pretty great w/ its TV series. Not enough time to watch them all though.
Nearly Middle Aged Woman Asks: Should I watch the Sopranos?

I had never seen an episode of the Sopranos either until my 18 year old son just went out and bought all six seasons. We decided to watch together because I always like a good mob story, so what the hell? Well, we must have watched all six seasons in about a month so we would be up to speed when the new episodes air in March. After the 2nd episode we were totally addicted to that theme song! Anyway, we loved it.
This show is not for the squeamish, though. I have never seen so many fake tits in my face, f-bombs dropped, and heads bashed to a bloody pulp in one month. And yet, strangely enough, this show is very, very, funny. You end up genuinely liking or at least sympathizing with some of the characters. I consider myself very anti-violence in principle and always close my eyes in gruesome scary scenes in the movies. Yet, I was totally hooked! For that alone they should get an emmy.

I'm not remotely squeamish so I am looking forward to it!
I can't believe Tij has not commented on this thread yet - he usually is clued up with the best dramas!
I am still not totally well after my episode of Spanish tummy so it would have been nice to have something to watch while I get better at home today.
Spectre Deadwood 2 took a little while to get into - but Swearengen is just the same dry wit - the script for Deadwood is so intelligent! I keep seeing all the characters popping up in Lost too.
Now to all those commenting on the "middle aged" comment - I worked it out this way - if I live til 96 then 32 marks the beginning of the middle - therefore middle aged! Therefore I am on the brink. Catch me before I get mature!!!!

Well, Miz Crumpet, I must respectfully disagree with your math.
I intend to live until I am 100, therefore 50 would be the middle, therefore at 43 I am not even closed to middle aged. And you are just a spring chicken. Now, mind your elders!

The characters and their experiences seem to be far from real life but strangely fascinating. It has all the things I hate--(not in any particular order) negative stereotypes of Italians, adultery, prostitution, drug/alcohol abuse, tons of smoking, crime, violence, sociopaths, greed, lying, etc. Despite that I seem to be unable to avoid watching it.

I think the violence on "Rome" makes "The Sopranos" look like Winne the Pooh in comparison.

OH! Another great HBO show(not on any longer) was Oz. A buddy of mine at work and I rented all of the dvd's and watched them in our office. After the first few episodes, we would get to laughing at even the bad stuff happening(it's a very serious drama). Gotta warn you though, there's quite a bit of full-frontal male nudity in it. But they did an excellent job in casting the show.

Yes....I adore Christopher Meloni.

Lonely - I have to ask - was the casting based on full frontal visual appeal? or acting ability of said appendage?
