Congrats Elsewhere, you've just invented the Alternator!

Don't worry, I knew a guy who did something dumber - he sprayed WD-40 into the power supply to grease up the fan.... while the computer was assembled. The power supply cacked because the circuit board was soaked in WD-40.

Else, your Mini Cooper has been hit 2X and your computer has blown up. That makes 3 in the bad luck category...unless the computer blowing up is just a result of....um....never mind. Anyway, I hope that's the last of your downhill slide and you make a great comeback!

    Hey Jourles,

    ...and unplug the A/C cable

I've listened to knock-down-drag-outs over this and don't what to think.

    One side says:

"Turn the system off, but leave the cord plugged in. This keeps the case grounded"

    The other side says:

"True, and that was good advice in the days of the 486, but ever since the advent of the ATX power supply, the MB is never truly powered down. You can severly damage it by leaving the AC plugged in."

    Reply:

"True but by turning the system off, we meant turn the power off at the power supply itself. This powers down the MB and keeps the case grounded. If your PS doesn't have this switch then of course you should unplug it."

"If you shut down the power at the power supply, you'll cut it off from ground anyway, so you might as well unplug it."

    "No it won't."

    "Yes it will."

"Here! Look inside the power supply! The ground wire is not switched!"

"There's better ways to ground the system --and yourself"

    What's your opinion?

Ideally? Get your computer to some sort of grounded workbench and put on that wriststrap and disconnect power. For home users I'll have to reply later as I'm getting ready to walk out the door.

You don't need to ground it if you're just blowing the dust out. Keeping it grounded is a good idea if you have your fingers inside the PC (putting in a card / drive) to prevent killing chips from static discharge coming from your body.

else did you buy a "how to clean puter out" book written by that home improvement guy? tim "the toolman" taylor? LOL

i too had dusty puter innards..i turned puter off and unplugged it, then took an old fat makeup brush and gently brushed the dustbunnies off the fan blades.

    no explosions! HA

    TD, my expert advice is:

Leave the AC hot, grab the terminals, and as your brains fry out of your ears, may your last words on this planet be "I hate Bill Gates!!!"
