Real world -- Making a hurried, but minor repair (e.g. A Case fan) in a cramped server / phone room with a nervous manager biting her nails right outside the door and beyond that,150 employees in cubicles loudly demanding that they be allowed to go home since the network is down

"True but by turning the system off, we meant turn the power off at the power supply itself. This powers down the MB and keeps the case grounded. If your PS doesn't have this switch then of course you should unplug it."
This is correct.

Turn the system off, but leave the cord plugged in. This keeps the case grounded
TD the master! Yep, you helped me fix one of my computers (way back when) when I thought all was lost you and...Oops! That other guy!
I was thinking the same thing about Elsewhere, that he wasn't using protection when he unplugged his baby, that he wasn't grounded!

too had dusty puter innards..i turned puter off and unplugged it, then took an old fat makeup brush and gently brushed the dustbunnies off the fan blades
So the answer lies in the tool used.

Else, you are beyond a doubt one of the most intelligent individuals I have met in my 70 years on this planet. So how come you keep pulling these dumb ass stunts ???? We'll discuss it in May with the Apostate elders present. Elders are Big Tex, Cruzanheart, and Moose. Oops, Moose is no longer with us, so we'll go to the kingdom hall and get a real elder.

Hey Jourles,
...and unplug the A/C cable
I've listened to knock-down-drag-outs over this and don't what to think.
One side says:
"Turn the system off, but leave the cord plugged in. This keeps the case grounded"
The other side says:
"True, and that was good advice in the days of the 486, but ever since the advent of the ATX power supply, the MB is never truly powered down. You can severly damage it by leaving the AC plugged in."
Reply:
"True but by turning the system off, we meant turn the power off at the power supply itself. This powers down the MB and keeps the case grounded. If your PS doesn't have this switch then of course you should unplug it."
"If you shut down the power at the power supply, you'll cut it off from ground anyway, so you might as well unplug it."
"No it won't."
"Yes it will."
"Here! Look inside the power supply! The ground wire is not switched!"
"There's better ways to ground the system --and yourself"
<<Discussion disolves into expletives>>
What's your opinion?
Unplug it doesn't matter if your grouned unless you mess with the mother board or cpu. But leaving it plugged in could result in you having an accident if some how it get turned on. I have change cards out on my dirty bed and my computer still work after four years.
