So then does it no longer is used to "build confidence"?

These are the two words that sent a big nail into the WT coffin as far as I was concerned:

Most importantly! The most important purpose of the Awake magazine was WRONG! How many times had they quoted the generation doctrine and bible verses they based it on? How many times must they have studied and discussed this? And they got it WRONG! The most important reason we had been reading the Awake magazine was WRONG! (Can I say this many more times?)

There is no purpose for reading the Awake mag. It is a major distraction from reading and meditating on the Bible. The only good article was the Bible's viewpoint.

May I ask, when did you notice this "change in purpose?"
Since I was so regular in the field ministry, I often referred to the purpose while discussing current events with return visits. Imagine my surprise when I went to quote from it and one day it wasn't there!
Kristen, could you check and see if they changed the 'purpose' right around the same time they dumped the 1914 generation crap, in 1995? I no longer have any literature or I'd check.

When the Nov 1, 95 Awake rag came out (which would've been Oct 95, I guess), there were a few comments about it in my then congregation, but then it just faded away. But comparing it word for word with the previous blurb gave me that distinctly uncomfortable feeling of having my convictions shaken.
If something "most important" could be wrong, what else could be wrong as well?
After that, I was never able to just accept the WT's glossy and improbable explanations on other areas, such as science and history, without that growing twinge of doubt. Eventually, I had to find out the reality for myself, and of course when you decide that, it's like taking the nearest exit from Brooklyn!
