Will God have mercy?

I was thinking of this the other day. Though I am not Christian or any other religion, and at times even question the validity of God (which becomes more appearent with all the shit that goes on in this world every day), I stopped and thought, what if? What if after this life those who did not believe in a higher power, ie God, go to meet this maker. Lets say when you meet your maker, he tells you that the Bible and other organized religions were not from him, but he still liked the idea that it helped man believe in him. Do you think God would hold it against you that you did not believe in Him? I would think, if he is all mercifull, that he would have mercy considering the state of the world and no real guidance by him. Thoughts?

If God is indeed love, I can't see why he couldn't just accept anyone who was a good person, regardless of their religion or opinions.

    I just asked Him.

    He said "Yes".

But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' [a] For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."- Matthew 9:13

There will be a resurection of all the dead and apart from the saints who will go straight to heaven the rest will apparently be given a second opportunity at least if they can plead ignorance and coercion in their first life. For most people it's not yet time for a final judgement. There will be a 1000 year reign (most likely 1000 here is not a literal number) then the non saintly dead will be resurrected and given that second chance. It's far too early to talk of final judgement.

Perhaps what the word G-O-D points to, is that which unconditionally accommodates all existence already; whereas the little pissy personal gods exist only between our ears and in the religious books we write; and so there is no genuine need to be concerned about what they do or don't do.

    Great topic,sinis.

I answer yes to your question. Why? I'm a reasonable and compassionate guy and if I were God I would cut the doubting some slack for the very reasons you mentioned in your question. Having said that, I'm sure that God must be far more reasonable and compassionate than am I. So doubters are good to go. I also believe it could get slightly more complicated. I believe in morality. Defined how in the absence of sacred text? Deliberate action or inaction that causes or does not prevent suffering is immoral. Deliberate action or inaction that alleviates or prevents suffering is moral. And everything else falls inbetween. These would be good standards for defining morality. And if God wants to vaporize me or anybody else, I guess that's ok too.

I was watching Futurama the other night and Bender becomes God. Anyone else see that episode? Funny as hell! Bender floating through the universe with a small race of beings living on his belly area, and the other living on his back. War breaks out between the two, over religion and they nuke each other. The whole time Bender, is like WTF? Lets talk this over. Then he drifts through space and happens upon a galaxy that contacts him via binary code. Anyway, Bender asks the galaxy cluster if its God. And the galaxy says, could be. Make a long story short, "god" is asked why he doesn't do anything, god says are you sure I'm not? God then says, "When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all."

Malachi: "The infidels on your back no longer believe in you. They say their prayers go unheeded."
Bender: "Of course they're unheeded, how am I supposed to hear prayers coming out of my ass?"

Malachi Jr: "Look Daddy, I'm hugging God! Mmmm, hmmm...maybe if I hug him real hard, he'll save us from..." *boom*
    Bender: "Noooo!"

Bender: "Hello? Is anyone still alive? How about in the porno theater? Don't be embarrassed!"

Bender: "Hey, that galaxy's signaling in binary. I gotta signal back! But I only know enough binary to ask where the bathroom is. You speak english?"
    God: "I do now."

Bender: "So, do you know what I'm gonna do before I do it?"
    God: "Yes."
Bender: "What if I do something different?"
God: "Then I don't know that."

    Bender: "I was God once."
God: "Yes, I saw. You were doing well until everyone died."

God: "Bender, being God isn't easy. If you do too much, people get dependent on you. And if you do nothing, they lose hope. You have to use a light touch, like a safecracker or a pickpocket."
Bender: "Or a guy who burns down a bar for the insurance money!"
God: "Yes, if you make it look like an electrical thing. When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all."

I always loved that episode of Futurama.

as for whether god will have mercy, why worry? Do your best - I don't see how a reasonable god (if there is such a thing as god which I doubt) could hold you accountable for rules you don't know.

What could a true, all-powerful, all-wise GOD need from any of us? Which one of us has anything a being of that magnitude would need -- or even want?
