Christians - Does a JW baptism count as Christian?

    Jeff,

I never gave thought about the change in baptism vows as a JW since I was baptised in 1970 and really didn't remember what the questions were about. My first baptism was as an infant Catholic. Second baptism was as a JW in 1970. My third baptism is taking place tonight in my church at the evening service. There are 10 of us getting baptised.

My joy and happiness are more than I ever had as a JW. The spiritual food that is dispensed in most Christian churches is much more filling than that given at a Kingdom Hall.

To me, this is a milestone in my life. I just didn't think my baptism as a JW stood for anything Christian!

This is my choice! I would never judge another on their choices in life. God knows I did way to much judging as a JW.

The first and only time I was ever baptized was in 1974 as a JW at age 31 but I had no comprehension of what baptism was all about due to my lack of bible knowledge so no, I don't feel like my baptism counted for anything. I have much more bible knowledge now but thanks to the research I have done in the past seven years concerning the bible I'm comfortable with not being a baptized Christian, I want no part of religion of any kind...these are my own personal feelings and they don't reflect on anyone except me. I consider my JW baptism as a valid Christian baptism because it was done as an outward symbol of my beliefs. Had I been baptised under the new rules I might not feel that way.

In one of Robert Heinlein's books he says that a symbol means what you say it means. That works for me.

Congrats, Happy Dad! I wish I could be there for your special moment.

These are the questions I would have answered yes to in 1973.

Two questions which do search out the heart and mind of each candidate are: (1) Have you recognized yourself as a sinner and needing salvation from Jehovah God? And have you acknowledged that this salvation proceeds from him and through his ransomer, Christ Jesus? (2) On the basis of this faith in God and in his provision for redemption have you dedicated yourself unreservedly to Jehovah God, to do his will henceforth as that will is revealed to you through Christ Jesus and through God’s Word as his holy spirit makes it plain? Those who answer "yes" audibly to these two questions so that the other persons present may witness their affirmation of dedication may appropriately be baptized. Watchtower 5/15/1970 Page 309

I always considered it to be in the name of 'the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit'.

Although I wasn't aware of it at the time (18 years old), my JW baptism confirmed that I was officially braindead. When I was revived many years later, I realized I chose to be baptized because it was expected by my family and the congregation. So, for me now, the baptism means nothing more than a serious lapse in judgment, reason, and responsibility as a thinking human being.

Personally, I believe that the WTS is straight from the pits of Hell. Therefore, I would urge anyone who wishes to accept Jesus Christ according to the scriptures to renounce the JW religion and get baptised by submersion in a traditional Christian church in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

What do you mean by "count"? No baptism makes you a Christian.

I don't believe a baptism by JW's would count, considering the reason and importance they put on it. To be baptised you are showing your outward willingness to follow the organisation. Baptism from a Christian viewpoint s being born again and having a personal relationship with Jesus, and allowing the holy spirt dwell within you. Cheers Steven

I was baptised Catholic as an infant. I have and can still trace thru the church written record of it. Can a JW trace his baptism? Does he have a written record?
