alphafemale, Actually I already have that "The God Delusion", it is a good book. If you liked that book try Darwinism and its Discontents by Michael Ruse.

Hi looseend, thanks for your recommendation, I might try it. I just googled 'creationism', and it came up with an 'informative' site: www.creationism.org. It gives a good insight into the creationist way of 'thinking'. There is some 'science' on it too. Anyway, thought it might be useful, if you haven't already looked there, that is. Academic research and writing can be a real pain can't it? Hope you are doing ok. Remember to take a break every so often! Alpha

I think a much more interesting paper would be to study the sociological dynamics that creates people who have a firmly held belief, unsupported by observation. It's also a fascinating study in itself watching the mental gymnastics these people will go through to support their belief. I'm thinking of the flat earth society, those who still believe in a world-wide flood, the lynching committee who forced a recantation from Galileo.

I find it hard to believe that you expect a greater varied source of information FROM THIS DISCUSSION BOARD than from a five minute browse through google. As another poster discreetly suggested, try googling "creationism". You'll find them.

Another good book is The Language of God, by Francis Collins. One thing right off the bat is the definition of the word THEORY. When this word is used with the science of evolution - it doesn't mean HYPOTHESIS. It is used the same way as Music would use the word THEORY. To the average joe the word theory tends to mean something thought up, an idea. Not so in the scientific world. wp

I was always a bright lad; even if I do say so myself.

As an active Jehovah's Witness I was totally in harmony with their explanation of Evolution.

I found it ludicrous and entirely laughable as an explanation for the origin of life.

After I was no longer a JW I carried my mindset along into the rest of my life. What need was there to even read about evolution inasmuch as it was ridiculous?

    However....

When I spoke to people I knew, loved and respected who were alot smarter than me I was faced with the fact they thought I was a moron for not investigating what evolution was really all about.

You see, I carried around with me my JW prejudiced foundational explanations of Evolution without going back to see if something dishonest was sneaked in in the first place!

Turns out I was lied to! Surprise! Surprise!

The bastards had lied to me plain and simple. I had been given STRAWMAN Evolution and not the real deal!

No wonder I thought Evolution was nonsense; the explanations carefully taught to me by Watchtower publications were heavily loaded with rhetoric, half-truths and outright misrepresentations of evidence. Lamarckism, for an example, has not been a mainstream explanation for a hundred years!

Oh me; oh my--what to do now? I had to start all over. I had to become completely ignorant, wipe out what I thought I "knew" and start from scratch.

I read books. I divided all the books I read into two groups: PRO and CON. I read one at a time and compared the actual evidence with the purported representation of "actual" evidence.

When the smoke cleared there was only one conclusion. Want to know what it is?

Christianity tells WHOPPER LIES about what Evolution is all about. They always have. They use the same tactics JW's use. They misrepresent the arguments and distort the evidence.

Why? Because they don't have a leg to stand on; that's why!

    It made me really furious.

I work in a bookstore. I work in the religion, philosophy and metaphysics sections. I see the boatload of Evolution books written for Christians. I try to read all of them. They are the worst lies you'll ever run across this side of the Communist Manifesto.

The argument against Evolution is intellectually dishonest.

When Darwin first presented his theories there was no knowledge or understanding whatsoever of HOW traits were inherited. Yet, Darwin's theories postulated that there WAS such a mechanism. His theory predicted what this mechanism would do; how it would function.

Then, DNA was discovered and eventually decoded. What was the result? Darwin was right!

The argument was over. The religious liars had egg on their face. They are not honest enough to admit how wrong they were/are to this day.

Now there are further attempts to reconcile the Bible with Evolution going on in the religious community. New explanations to harmonize scripture with actual scientific evidence.

The leader among these writers is HUGH ROSS of Reasons to Believe. I suggest you see what he has done with the religious arguments. He is taking a semi-rational approach by changing the scriptures into extreme interpretive metaphor.

    http://www.reasons.org/

Yet, the greatest rabbi of the ages, Mamonides, was there first! Where the scriptures and science clash you must re-interpret scripture as METAPHOR, Mamonides said!

Even the Catholic Church, a notoriously entrenched institution, is way ahead of mainstream Christendom in accepting evolutionary evidence as an explanation of the "mechanism" by which life changes.

The Jehovah's Witnesses are left in the most extreme lurch! They are hardcore liars and hold-outs with luddite explanations that continue bull-headedly into the 21st century.

The Watchtower bloats its own rhetoric by belittling all things science and twisting the evidence into half-quotes, misquotes and outright strawman fallacy.

They are among the last of the refuges of tiny minded scoundrels who will sacrifice reality to mystic stranglehold on the minds of willing dupes.

looseend - are you familiar with Alfred Russel Wallace? It was his papers on natural selection that forced Darwin to prematurely publish his own, to save total preemption. He's an interesting character in so far as he felt it necessary to look at both natural selection and "supernatural selection". http://www.wku.edu/~smithch/index1.htm

PS which age group is your paper targetted at?
