I now am employed in the business of doing at least one job that Americans WILL NOT DO!!!
The business is operated by many foriegners, many of African descent. Ethiopia, West Africa, The Ivory Coast, Liberia and places of the like. I've had numerous conversations with these individuals and how they are changing the face of the American landscape. They are some of the hardest working people I have ever met in my life. These people have a spirit and a drive that goes un-matched among thier counterparts of African descent, but who are born and raised, living here all thier lives. Yes, the African- Americans, or whatever we're being called now.
They have an endless source of applicants for these jobs, that Americans WILL NOT DO. yet they will very rarely hire one of "MY PEOPLE". They will rely more on keeping the trough filled with people of thier own kind, as we are regarded, African Americans, as lazy, spoiled, don't have a good attitude, we will most times not allow ourselves to come under the will of someone who is a foreigner and in a position of leadership. When they hire thier own kind, they find that they can keep the reigns of control more to thier advantage because they are dealing with someone who has not been infected with the attitude of a Westernised American, African or otherwise.
People who come from these countries are eager to not just put thier nose to the grindstone put willing to sacrifice it entirely, if necessary. They recognise how hard it is to live in this country, but they also see that there are a wealth of opportunity available to forge themselves a better life. Many are here only to make a few hundred or so thousand to take back to thier country so they can live like kings.
They don't regard black people here with much value as we have often showed ourselves to be thieves, or slicksters, always trying to pull a fast one. It's a massive revolving door that I've seen in the brief time that I've been there, but I've only seen one African American come on board and that was only because he'd already shown some promise from working there previously. Although now, he hasn't showed up for work in 2 days. Yesterday a no-call/no show.
Dave, What's up? We's worried about cha'.
I would leave it up to your boss to do the hiring,
I think that is agood idea otherwise you might find yourself in a lawsuit. It is against the law here to not hire because of color -religion- I would explain that to your boss.Let HIM take the flack
Seriously Mouthy has given excellent advice there - you could see yourself held up to blame for this. In fact its quite possible your employer knows this anyway which is why you have been given the task and so his ass is covered.
Thanks for posting this though as just now I am studying racialization and ethnicization and you've reminded me how relevant it is and that actually I should be at my text books - not here!
Ok I want to say from Prophecor's post:
I really blame politicians and leaders of the black community for putting a lid on black culture in this way. Thank God for them (black leaders and politicians) in pulling American society out of the dark ages and the legalized and socialized racism that was tolerated. (and of course I know that racism still exists, I'm sorry for that, seriously - but fighting that can't be the only avenue taken by black leaders)
Since then it seems they only go back to the troth of blaming society for individual failings of black individuals rather than leading black culture.
I think they did this as it was easier for them, black leaders and politicians.
Bill Cosby says something like prophecor just said and he's attacked by the NAACP.
Colin Powell isn't considered "black enough" to be looked at as a role model.
It's like black leaders keep a lid on what "black" is and who's to blame for all the problems and it's short changing their own communities.
I wished it were different for everyone's sake. But I hope a new class of black leaders will step up and embrace black as a color and race not black as a political term. Black leaders who will point to black women and men of ALL neighborhoods, backgrounds and career paths as inspirations for young black and women. To free everyone from thinking that in order to be "black" you have to talk and think a certain way.
Racism isn't just a black problem and whites don't want to work, live, play with racists these days. (yes I know that's not entirely true)
But if a young man comes in for a job interview and is slouched down, mumbling, has an attitude and I don't hire him am I a racist? If he's white am I a racist? You get my point. It's black leaders who still want to only put pressure on society to feel not hiring the young man makes you a racist rather than saying to the young man - sit up and speak up.
Don't anyone dare to call me a racist either, that seems the way certain ones operate when anyone points out that some aspect of black culture is productive - slap the racism card on them and shut down the conversation.
Many of us who are black in America, ( And Other Than Black ) are unwilling to do some of these most simple and yet basic jobs. They don't have the glory attached to them that a construction worker, building a high rise might get, or someone who works in an office behind a desk.
Many that you see driving cabs in my locale, are of foreign descent. Those who park cars, or doing landscaping, or any several hundred jobs that we Americans feel are just beneath us. " I'm not gonna' do, XY&Z for 1,2&3 dollars more an hour. I want 7,8&9 dollars more to do that."
I guess I'm the exception to the rule when it comes to job performance, as I regard all jobs I uphold with the absolute and ut-most seriousness. Drive, dedication and determination, whether I'm digging a ditch, washing dishes, or flying the space shuttle, I resolve in myself to be the best at what I'm doing. A commitment to excellence, regardless for how simple and menial others may view my employment.
I resolve in myself to be the best at what I'm doing. A commitment to excellence, regardless for how simple and menial others may view my employment
Thats what I call a real man no matter what color they are

My goodness! You guys (speaking negatively of black Americans) need to take a class on diversity! Sheesh! You don't know how many jobs that have been outsourced do you? Not because you are black or white, just because of cheap labor! Oh, and I have worked with many lazy foreign nurses! They come to work everyday and sit on their butts! Yeah, they're reliable! I hate to say this, but I kind of thought that someone was a sell-out!
MrsMcD said:"I hate to say this, but I kind of thought that someone was a sell-out!"
If you mean Colin Powell to his own principles, so did I.
If you mean Colin Powell to Black America, why? Because he's not a liberal democrate? Didn't speak constantly of the issue or racism? Wasn't the typical black leader in that sense?
Why can't a young black man or woman be conserviative or not embrace all the same methods of Rev Sharpton or Rev Jackson?
