Blondie - I have no problem with anyone being a plumber. This boy was scoring at school at the age of 9 what a 14 year would have achieved in his SATS results. His teachers are keen for him to go to university as he is so clever a Maths and Sciences. He could even be a brilliant scientist/doctor whatever. The aim in being a plumber (which I want to say again is not a profession I am saying is of no use) but is to 'serve' as a Watchtower slave as they always talk about how the Society can use him in KH builds etc.

It's the loss of his POTENTIAL, and his FULL potential that concerns me!

'You can lead a normal life and still share in the preaching work. Get a good job and guarantee your financial security.' This may seem to be sound advice, but would you reallyb e training yourself with a godly devotion as your aim if you were to follow it?'

    YES!

Plumbers in the US have to take 4 to 5 years of full-time schooling and training to qualify as a licensed plumber. Training is through the unions here. I would have no problem with one of my children choosing a trade like plumbing or electrician...they make good money, more than some with university degrees. I take it less schooling and training is required in the UK to be a licensed plumber

It takes roughly the same time in the UK, maybe a bit shorter. They do make good money too, more than I do - thats when they turn up to do the work that is*!

    * Slight dig about British plumbers which any brit will probably be able to concur with!

***How did Matthew deal with that opposition?***

This is twisted. The father lovingly wants what's in his son's best interest: to use his educational advantage to earn a living. But because the WT already has it's nasty claws in the young man, that makes dad an OPPOSER.

And they claim they don't divide families?

    Betterdaze-

I completely agree!! I have always hated how they look down on people living a "normal" life! These words in the Watchtower just show how ABnormal these lame writers are!!

Stop with the 'We love Plumbers' line!

There is nothing wrong with being a plumber!

I am meaning 'intellectual' and even 'practical' potential of an amazingly bright young man! Doomed to 'shit shift' and replace washers, instead of find a cure for cancer!!!!

Indeed, the literature and practices (of the Jehovah's Witnesses) circumscribe the educational goals of members to meet the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society's (WB&TS) needs, always at the expense of the individual and his or her family. (Just the way a cult operates!)

If and when they promote education, it is always to exploit a few limited skill sets, directing followers into a Watchtower Bible & Tract Society-Approved Career, (TM), such as plumbing, cleaning, nursing or construction. (I imagine they've helped promote education for a few of the lawyers who defend their crack-pot ideas, as well). The Watchtower Society then uses its volunteers' skills and training without renumerating workers. (Just the way a cult operates!)

This volunteer work force with such specific skill sets enables the organization to promote wacky health ideas such as refusing blood transfusions. (Just the way a cult operates!)

These minimally-educated, minimally-skilled volunteer members also allow for the continued (real estate) expansionism of the WB&TS, with little or no benefit to the individuals who made the wealth of the organization possible. (Just the way a cult operates!)

It's all about keeping people and their skills hooked to the WB&T Society, not ever about promoting the growth and development of higher, individual, human potential, because such individual development by means of education is perceived as either dangerous to "The Society," (as Jehovah's Witnesses so fondly refer to their organization) or destructive to the individual's reliance on their "governing body." (Just the way a cult operates!)

The WB&T Society's only focus on the future is on that fantasy, post-armageddon, utopia that never arrives. (Just the way a cult operates!)

And, by the way, those who don't survive their version of armageddon, will include all of the highly-educated and useful doctors, adminstrators, lawyers, architects, MBAs, scientists, surgeons, miscellaneous medical workers of all sorts, artists, writers, intellectuals, teachers, professors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, PLUMBERS, and others whose professions usually require a degree of education that goes beyond 2 years of trade school. (Just the way a cult operates!)

I wonder how well the Jehovah's Witnesses will fare without the benefit of skilled, educated people in the aftermath of Armageddon: "What? You're bleeding and burned? You have a broken arm? Quit whining, sighing and moaning and have faith that jah will provide. . . Who needs a doctor? Jehovah will fix it all . . . Just wait on Him . . . Trust in Him . . . He wil provide healing . . . What, you claim that you and your kids are deeply traumatized by witnessing the absolute destruction of 6 billion people . . . Just wait on Jehovah and pray more; we don't need any psychologists, psychiatrists or social workers . . . jehovah will provide all our needs . . . who needs those burned down universities? . . . OK, let's all build a Great Kingdom Hall now . . ."

Matthew's story is an Urban Legend...made-up by the WTS to make the publishers feel guilty.

    Education gets yet another bashing!!

And a well deserved bashing at that. I mean, do you understand how hard it is for the WTS to control an educated person? Huh? do you? If everyone in the WTS was educated, that whole institution would just collapse!!! We cant have that. Then where would all the sheep go? Oh ya... there wouldnt be no stinking sheep left
