Also it says that her companions "visited" her every year for 4 days.
Looking it up in a few versions they all read "go to lament her", or, "it became a rule that they go sorrow for her". The Insight book notes that it does say "lament" in the KJV but in that footnote it says "Talk with". The dubs version says they go "and give commendation to the daughter of Jephthah" etc. It's not "her companions" but "the daughters of Israel": v. 40 shows that the story serves, among other things, as an etiology for an old ritual in Gilead, associated with the loss of virginity (perhaps involving cultic prostitution "on the mountains," cf. Jeremiah 13:27?). The verb suggests a song (it appears in the same form only in 5:11), of either praise or lament.

So the daughter went out into the wilderness to "bewail her virginity" and then came back and Jeptha burned her up.
Jer 19:5 5 And they built the high places of the Ba´al in order to burn their sons in the fire as whole burnt offerings to the Ba´al, something that I had not commanded or spoken of, and that had not come up into my heart.”’
Jer 32:35 35 Furthermore, they built the high places of Ba´al that are in the valley of the son of Hin´nom, in order to make their sons and their daughters pass through [the fire] to Mo´lech, a thing that I did not command them, neither did it come up into my heart to do this detestable thing, for the purpose of making Judah sin.’
Could not have been the burning of his own daughter,

abr,
Yes, it would seem that one wouldn't do such a thing because God had said not to- but there are many accounts of the Israelites killing man woman and child and also "taking for themselves" the young women who had never "known a man" (I can hardly imagine this was voluntary on their part, so it was also RAPE). So it is not so hard to imagine that one of Yahweh's followers would offer up as burnt sacrifice a member of his household (he was perhaps thinking it would be a "lowly" servant)...
And even though this may be perplexing to you and other Christians, the scripture DO say that he offered her up as a burnt sacrifice. There is really no way out of what it says in black and white... Using the reasoning that you offered, one might think that the Israelites would not have done any of the other atrocities (killing a man for gathering wood on the Sabbath!?!? What about his husbandless, fatherless family he left behind?? What a petty rule!!) that they committed.
Respectfully,

True avidbiblereader, he does condemn the action of sacrificing children.
But then again he also said at Ezekial 18:20 that it was wrong to punish the child for the sins of the parent... but that doesn't stop him from doing exactly that in Exodus 20:5 or in 2nd Samuel 12:13-14.
He also said not to make any idols in Leviticus 26:11 but orders them to make idols in Exodus 25:18.
Then there's the eye for an eye rule: Which is required in Leviticus 24:17-21 but then condemned in Matthew 5:38-40
God changes his mind about what is right or wrong quite often acctually. Why would this particular instance be any different?

-are you actually 17??Thank you. And yes I'm 17... Untill the end of April that is. (At which point I can kick my butt into high gear, and hopefully be free of this cult by this time next year.)

Sigh.
I wish I was as far along as you are when I was 17.
You are so lucky to see the dubs as you do at this point. You have a 10-year head start on certain things compared to me.
Good for you- you seem like a crazy smart kid. :)
I am doing well, don't get me wrong- I just wonder what I could have done and how progressed I would be if I had the past 5, 10 or 15 years back from the somewhat crippling (intellectually, socially, spiritually) experience of being a true blue dub...
Well!- It's what I do now that guides my life, not wasted time in the past...
Thanks for your input LtCmdLore! always interesting! :)

It is highly likely that he did sacrifice her. She would not have been burned alive, as has already been pointed out, the sacrifices had their throats ritually cut. Although they learned better later, they may well have practiced human sacrifice earlier. The story of Abraham & Issac is included in the scriptures to make it clear that sacrificing the first born is neither required nor acceptable. Muslims believe the story orignially had Ismael being the planned sacrifice and not Issac. Probably this is the more accurate account since Ismael was the first born.
