Fifteen British military personnel are taken captive by our supposed enemy, Iran, and taken care of very well by all appearances for 12 days.

British football fans go to Rome and many innocent ones amongst them have the living bejeebeez beaten out of them by maniacal baton wielding Roman policemen!

Makes you wonder doesn't it! With friends like these, who NEEDS enemies?

I have nothing at all against Iran. I just knew that there would be trouble at last night's game - but, as always, no doubt it will be the English fans at fault, since they are always blamed for crowd trouble. The Italian police are brutal, if it was here, the police would be waiting outside visiting fan's toilets with a toilet roll and asking each one of them 'would sir like a wipe?'

needproof - I should imagine that some british fans did misbehave. Do we want to see police, the supposed forces of law and order beating the brains out of them? In the end, it was a silly football match and I believe this is the second occassion where foreign police have attacked british fans. The other one was when the fans were trapped behind fencing and had tear gas thrown at them and police attacked them.

So, who is going to protect the innocent members of the british football fans?

We can threaten action against Iran when 15 naval personnel are captured but taken care of, but football fans.....well, just beat them all up and gas them!

About time the foot ball fans took action themselves and voted with their wallets to not attend the 'beat the british' parties!

I really like your comparison on the two news stories of the day Gill!

Yes, very striking comparison Gill (no pun intended there!)

The thing about how the Italian police thugs behaved is that they didn't treat the Italian fans the same and they were totally indiscriminate as to who was causing trouble and who wasn't - it's reported that there were even young children beaten with batons.

Also nobody (even hooligans) should ever be hit over the head with batons. Maybe it will take someone to die before they learn that

I have little sympathy for hooligans when they get a beating - they should expect it, but last night, both sides had their hooligan elements and it's only those who should have been targeted.

Heaven knows what's going to happen on the second leg of this game now ...

Crumpet - seeing the stories got me wondering, 'who really is the enemy?' Is it someone who attacks 'your people' or is it someone who has something that your government WANTS ie oil!? Are the british government going to make an official complaint to the Italian government over how its innocent citizens were abused? I'm not holding my breath!

Sad Emo - A hooligan is a hooligan because they act like a hooligan. The Italian Police acted like hooligans and savagely beat the british. Show me a beaten Italian, please that was attacked by the police last night. I haven't seen one yet.

Why is Mr Blair not standing on the steps of Downing Street condemning this unlawful attack on British subjects? OK We have plenty of spaghetti and we can make our own if we want to!! IF the Italians had oil (and I'm not talking Olive oil here) we'd be geared up for war!!

Blair is a complete waste of time. Besides, he does support Newcastle United!

    Gill, UEFA will investigate (hopefully...).

We do not know what happened before the match and as Rafa Benitez said when asked about the incident, it is difficult to judge sitting in front of TV.

One thing is for sure, earlier this season a policeman was killed in Italy by Italian hooligans. I guess policemen are now scared and prefer to attack rather than being attacked (I do not justify this attitude).

Out of their home country (where the problem of hooliganism is sort of managed) some English fans are not exactly mild, add to the fact that Roma fans are among the worst in Italy...

The solution is simple - lets ban football ;p

JeanV - Though I agree that we do not know what happened before the match, we all saw people already on the floor having their heads beaten with batons. That is another and just as reprehensible form of hooliganism!

Needproof - DEFINITELY! Ban Football!!!!! Silly game full of overpaid, undereducated moronic prima donnas! Or is that too much of a generalisation, I wonder!?
