Well, I decided to install a DVD writer in place of my old basic CD player. Piece of cake usually, but not on this computer. All I did was take the old one out and put the new one in with exactly the same settings.

So anyway, it didnt like it at all. At first the boot up went all Commodore 64ish, and sometimes it recognizes the writers, other times it will not. To cap it off windows wont even boot, and if I am lucky enough to get to the windows boot menu my keyboard will just freeze up on me. It lets me tap in F8 at the beginning, when I get through it just freezes.. any suggestions?

check the jumper on the back of the cd rom you are replacing ... is it on Master or Slave or CS (cable select)? Whatever it's on... make sure it's the same on your new burner.

Hi, yes, I did check that beforehand, and have tried with every other setting also.

That said, I think that article was the funniest thing I have ever read! How ridiculous is that!

there is not really much else... 1) the new drive is jacked 2) it's not compatible

I have a similar problem...in this case it's not compatible ... the PC is an older IBM branded piece of crap. What is yours???

Built 2002, has a long history of health problems, AMD 1800+ custom built but now getting on in years. It just doesn't like being introduced to new people.

Hard to be of much help without knowing more specifics.

Does your computer recognize the new device at the BIOS level?

I had this problem a long time ago...

Some drives get stupid with other drives that are on the same IDE cable. If your PC has Primary and Secondary IDE cables, try moving your drive to the other one.
