Something else to check. Some IDE cables have a wire missing as well. You may see a small hole in the cable where it was cut out. Newer drives like EIDE need all the wires installed.

kay, I guess that's not helpful lol, but good luck fixing it anyway - looks like you're getting a few different ideas to try out.

*Set Jumper to the same as previous drive was, either Master/Slave/Cable Select. Master means it needs to be on the TOP part of the Cable, Slave means second one along. IF you are using the Hard Drive and DVD Writer on the Same cable, make DVD Writer Master or Cable Select and the Hard Drive to Slave or if the DVD Writer is Cable Select, do the same.

*Check BIOS Settings - Scan for drives so you KNOW the Computer is aware of the fact the DVD drive is there, then Save the new settings so it is always aware. It won't forget because you have a little battery on the motherboard designed to remember this information should the power cable be disconnected.

*Check all Power Cables to Devices and all IDE Cables to the Motherboard

    - What Windows Versions do you have? XP/Vista will work with DVD Writers from within the OS, Windows 9x and 2000 will not detect it and will need 3rd Party Software to use it. However this isnt anything to do with it not booting.

    Issues like yours aren't uncommon!

Sometimes for example your Motherboard may not like newer drives depending on its age. IF you know how, flash your BIOS on the motherboard and update it. This will allow it to recognize newer hardware.

Manufacturers of either the Motherboard (if its a recent one) or the DVD Writer may be aware of issues with certain hardware. Check their Websites under Troubleshooting/FAQ and/or their Forums.

I might try the items KW13 suggested. However, I've been working in this industry for so long that sometimes it gets to the point where it's not worth the trouble.

Maybe you return that one and get another brand or model? If you've got your jumpers set right and rechecked the power and data cables and got things set up correctly in the BIOS, you should be good.

IMO, if it takes much more than that, it's not worth the trouble.

I'd like to thank you all for your suggestions. Sorry I did not get back here earlier but I am pleased to say the problem is now solved, thank you all very much.

What happened was the CMOS was corrupt, so I had to clear it - after that it worked a treat.

    Funny things, aren't they?

Really? I never knew that. I didn't have any problems with my DVD writer in Win2k. But then again, I use Nero 7 to burn discs. I normally don't pay attention to what Whinedows detects and what it doesn't like.

Yep, it needs things like Nero e.t.c to be able to Burn discs and recognize blank discs, obviously the hardware is recognized.
