In the 1960's club scene in New York, Judy Garland was a celebrity who was very accepting of her gay fans. On the down-low during a period of frequent beatings by police, gay men would often ask other men, "Are you a friend of Dorthy's?" This was an underground code for "Are you homosexual?" that evolved from Judy Garland's role in the Wizard of Oz?
On June 22, 1969, when Judy Garland died, several gay and transgender people gathered in the Stonewall bar in New York City in their grief. The place was raided by the police who once again began beating the crap out of the "queers." This time they had enough and a riot broke out. The Stonewall riot became the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement. Consequently, because of the famous song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from Judy Garland's most memorable movie, the rainbow became a symbol for diversity, especially among the gay community. Eventually the words gay and queer were taken over by the GLBT community, as were the pink triangle symbol that they died wearing in Nazi Germany.
