Loves I'm sorry to hear this.
When my s-i-l died a few years ago my brother was overcome with grief. My mother and I went not knowing what we could do. It quickly became obvious.
Cleaning had been let go around the house. Laundry and dishes needed washing. My mother who isn't the empathetic kind took to the cleaning.
I took care of the kids, providing a person they could talk to or sit quietly with. I attended to their emotional needs the best I could.
If you are staying in their home then it might not be too hard to see what needs to be done
