The THIRD DIMENSION of Understanding

What could be more different? What could be more separate? What could be more distinctively UNALIKE than a cricle

    ....and

    a triangle..

    ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Clearly, one shape has curved sides equal distance from its center point while....

the other has straight lines meeting in angles.

I'd like you to consider these two shapes and their UNalike characteristics as a kind of metaphor for religion. Specifically Christianity.

There is Orthodox Christianity which narrowly defines itself by the standard set at the Council of Nicea in 325 c.e. We'll call this self-identifying section of the Christian religion as the Circle set.

Then, there is sectarian Christianity which diverges from Orthodox Christianity by narrowly selecting other self-identifications. We'll call these groups of self-identifying Christians as the Triangle set.

These oppositional groups both call themselves CHRISTIANS.

Both of these groups (you might even say ALL of these groups) differ with each other because of the way they view the SHAPE of Christianity in the BIBLE which is purported to be the gold standard of identification.

Arguments, divisions, sects, conflicts, heresies, apostacies all stem from narrow self-definitions of the overall TRUE SHAPE of Christianity and the view of the Bible's standard.

The split between the historic traditional Catholic Church and the Protestant version of True Christianity also stems from this narrowly defined view of the overall SHAPE of Christianity vis a vis the Bible.

What if we take this two-dimensional argument and project it outward into a THREE DIMENSIONAL VIEW which eliminates the bifurcated (either/or) view?

Is there a shape which reveals itself to contain the Circle and the Triangle and harmonizes them?

    Yes!

It is the cone section: This contains the circle, the triangle and a third dimension harmonizing both

By taking a larger view we see ALL rather than part.

The Truth, the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth is the Cone section.

Okay, where does this leave us? Lost in metaphor?

    No.

The Bible is the result of differences of opinion put down in words and attributed to ONE source: God.

The history of the development of the Bible reveals this process as one of pressure groups vying for dominance.

A study of the history of the oral traditions, written versions, revised versions and selectively redacted versions is the Cone Section view.

The standard has been manipulated over and over. But, the manipulation has at all times been hidden by the rhetoric claiming ONE view and only ONE view is possible: God's view. The Bible has been purported, presented and peddled as the ONE and ONLY view.

    It is not either/or.

Until we step back and view the Bible as a third dimensional shape which must include the meddling hand of biased human beings we cannot ever see the True View.

    What is True?

Whoever represents THEIR VIEW as the ONLY view and passes it off as the mind of God has the most narrow vantage point. The narrow definition only works if:

1.You never look at your religion from any OTHER angle.

2.You are not permitted to view Christianity from any other vantage point.

Which version of Christianity is True, then?

Is it the Circle, the Triangle or the Cone?

The Cone view shows men trying to gain power by hiding all other views from sight and labeling the "other" as the enemy.

Until we step back and study the actual history of the Bible can we see ALL SIDES of what is True.

Terry, remember this "KISS". sometimes that's all it takes. I understand that the Bible is not inspired of God and that man wrote and rewrote and rewrote the Bible. Among the many books I read on the subject about the Bible is the one recommended by you. Misquoting Jesus. The story behind who changed the Bible and why. How mistakes and changes shaped the Bible we read today. About the third dimension of understanding, I understand.

About the third dimension of understanding, I understand.

I may be a simple soul (or simpleton) but, I recall feeling an epiphany upon considering that Truth might not be a purely exclusional act of intellect.

After all, how can so many truly honest and wonderful people simply be enemies of God and minions of a Devil?

Dividing people into groups is hateful.

Why not step back and see that all groups are doing the best they can with a very narrow line-of-sight view of a much larger shape?

What if every person in all parts of Christianity were to allow themselves the vantage point of recognizing their standard (Bible) as a heaping pile of opinions, arguments and filterings of mytho-historical amalgams?

Could being Dogmatic even be possible anymore?

You can't accuse the other fella of being the Devil's Own unless you have the hubris of appointing your own view as the one and only True view possible.

In other words: Anointed my ass!!

Terry, The Bible is either inspired of God or it is not inspired of God. One of these two views is true or false. My own view from studying the actual history of The Bible, is that The Bible is not inspired of God and that's no hubris, there are facts to support my own view. Others are entitled to view otherwise and I take no hard line with them.

    I agree.

What if every person in all parts of Christianity were to allow themselves the vantage point of recognizing their standard (Bible) as a heaping pile of opinions, arguments and filterings of mytho-historical amalgams?

I wonder how civilization would handle it if that happened.

I like John Lennon's song " Imagine" What if every person in all parts of Christianity just took a deep look at what he wrote in that song.

The sadistic first step of the fascist is dividing before conquering. To divide; it is first necessary to cause division to appear necessary and inevitable. Labeling the "other" as not only wrong, but, Evil is ever effective.

However, to be exclusively right is to place a burden upon oneself to CHANGE what is different for the "others" own good!

Once you grant yourself the mandate to change (or, by default, to destroy) others for their own good--all moral context falls away into orthodoxy.

It is the Absolutism of Orthodoxy which empowers the despot and transforms the humblest of citizens (or group members) into willing participants in purges, ethnic cleansing and holacaust.

The Third Dimension of understanding (if I might so pompously label it) is the first casualty of brute force.

Christianity is kept 1 dimensonal, sometimes 2, for a specific reason..Control.....A well educated theologian looks at the history and culture of that era..In some cases travel to that area to get a perspective on what really happened.....Did Jesus really over turn all the tables of the money changers at the temple?..The place is as big as a football field.....Did Moses really cross a parted sea with the Isrealites?..Napolean crossed at the same spot with his troops, there is a ridge in the water at that spot.....How much history has been embellished or exaggerated?..How many want to do the research,to find out?.....It`s much easyier for most,to hear a good story and leave it at that...OUTLAW

    Quite so!

Only when one deliberately arranges events into a dramatic scenario and plugs in a heroic (or anti-heroic) central cast of characters does an ideological framework for "meaning" transform events into a mechanism for the control of minds and groups toward some end point of domination!
