More than I want to remember. I handled the accounts off an on for over 20 years in various congregations. If we had a shortfall meeting our minimum obligations, whenever I could, I would make up the difference. Before we left, the cong. Secretary told me that our family contributed over 25% of the money, and put in about 25% of the hours posted by the congregation. At the time, it was something I was proud of. doh!

When I lived at home my father gave plenty, I would say 1000.00 a year. I pioneered for 2 decades and sacrificed half of my life to them. How can I put a price to that.

I didn't give much either. Maybe two or three times a year I would remember to donate for literature - less than $5. I worked a low paying part-time job so that I could pioneer - work for them for free. My little bit of money was mine.

I recall an incident with my family back in the late fifties. One night after the meeting my Dad & Mom stopped at a grocery store for some basic food items. That's when Dad realized that out of that weeks grocery budget of $25.00 for a family of four, he had accidently stuffed a twenty instead of of a five into the C. box. My sister and I sat in the back seat and listened as Mom and dad agonized about what to do. In the end, Dad drove back to the KH and explained his mistake to the brother who had collected the receipts. He traded a five for the twenty that was going to feed us for the next seven days.

I was a JW for 26 years, 8 of them working years. All up, probably about $1.

I worked hard for my money and never saw why I should part with it to an organization that made heaps out of me when I paid for mags, books etc. If they were a true charity like the red cross etc and helped others, it may be a little different...

Since my husband handled the accounts, he knew that approximately 7 families or individuals gave each month. He was aware of what it took to keep the lights on, the AC/heat rolling out, and the phone operating. We figured we attended the meetings so should at least give some toward the utilities. We knew that God didn't drop dollar bills from heaven into the contribution boxes but used people to support. We did not give anything to the worldwide work but we did support the local expenses of the KH. But we were believers then. When we stopped being believers, we voted with our pocketbook. But then we didn't attend meetings any more.

Actually I was a rare dub that really hated the very idea or "donation" boxes. I remember my last time I was there there were 3 different boxes, one for "world wide work" one for "local needs" and one for "missionaries" so they can get home for holidays or something. They are like government always finding new reasons to bring up new taxes.
