BL...I don't have any extensive experience with 4GB RAM memory issues, but that combined with the newer dual core processors, motherboards and dual channel memory it really is possible that there are compatibility issues that the computer builders aren't aware of. It may not have been intentional, but that should be their problem, not yours. They should make it right no matter what. I'm glad your brother is there to help. He can throw a fit.

BL...If you need to play hardball with these guys and need some ammo, explain that you didn't buy the computer to surf the web. You asked for certain specifications for a reason.

You needed the full 4GB's to run specific video editing and graphics software programs, without the full use of the 4GB's, the computer is worthless to you. In fact, you could say that the video editing software programs will not even install because you get an error message when you try to install them stating that the system requires a minimum 4GB of RAM to operate.

    Good luck!

    Hey Butt!

My opinion is that there are a few posibilities:

    1) The BIOS on the motherboard won't handle 4GB. of RAM and won't allow WIndows to address the upper registers thereby only reporting 3 and a quarter Gig or RAM.

    2) Maybe ya' need to double check the reported figure. Could be yur slightly confuseled or somthin', somethin' and just seein' the CPU speed in GHz.

    3) Or, they ripped ya off. New motherboards run in what is called dual channel mode when you have two memory banks filled. To get 4GB of Ram, you would more than likely have four 1Gb sticks. By default that would give you two pairs and put it in dual channel mode. But...the RAM sticks have to be identical sized pairs for this to work (I mean the 2 sticks in a pair have to be the same). I can't make the math add up where you would get what you are reporting and have the sticks of RAM match in pairs. You might get that amount if you put in three 1GB sticks and one 256MB stick though. But, the kicker to that is that when they built the system, they would know it because it wouldn't go into dual channel mode and might possibly even give an error message until the BIOS settings were forced. I look for the boot message telling me the RAM is in dual channel mode when I build. I'm confirming that the RAM is appearing properly that way. They could have just gotten sloppy and missed this I suppose.

I'm not ranking any of those options in any particular order.

Hope you get it worked out.

ps, ya can tell 'em I'll come kick their asses if they don't make it right.

The reason you're having this problem is because 32-bit Windows XP can only see a little over 3GB (between 3GB-3.5GB usually) of ram because of the limitations of the 32-bit address space...the extra ram that XP isn't showing is used for system resources like PCI in/out. In order for XP to see the full 4GB you'd have to get Windows XP 64-bit version or 64-bit Vista, etc...

I know why you bought a super fast computer Buttlight.

You think that you'll have a better chance of beating me in checkers right

    JH, you have a PM.

Possibly, and I am not an expert, you have 4 GB and after the applications of windows XP you have the 3.28 GB left available.

Does your new mouse have a ball under it or is it the type with the laser light?

If it's the laser light, maybe the surface of the pad is reflective.

Its the light one.........the pad is a beach scene....but mostly just a dark blue color. But even if im not touching the desk or mouse at all it does it. I heard different patterns on the pad can make it happen.
