My poor boy is wrapped up in tape on his back leg up to the end of his foot. Despite the pill to make him sleepy he is pretending like he is normal, other than shaking that back foot periodically.

There is nothing worse than inflicting pain on innocent animals that we love......accidentally.

Thanks for all your responses.....it helps.

    Yeouch!!!

I've done that a few times with guinea pigs - they bled enough so I can imagine how a large dog claw bleeds!

Should be ok as long as you keep it clean for him

Pick up one of those sticks men used to use if they cut themselves shaving. That's what our puppy teacher told us to do. Guys, what are those things called? I have one somewhere but can't find it.

    Minimus....

I'd clip you if I could! LOL......its not easy taking care of 100 plus pound dogs, but they are loved as if they were our own babies. We just had a vet visit at the house...$300.00 plus.(for one dog)....so groomers are out of the question.

I had clipped them in the past and never had a problem.

By the way....my nails look terrible,....guess I'm not a manicurist after all.....

I Have done that before it does make you feel so bad . But here is a story to cheer you up ,to prove what you did was not nearly that bad ......I can't believe I'm going to admit to doing this ......... I have a long haired Himalayan cat and his fur gets matted round the base of his tail and back of his legs (because he doesn't like being combed there ) . Anyways one day I sneak up behind him while he is eating to cut these mats out with my new hair shears ...as I am snipping away he is starting to move around all agitated I clip faster when all of the sudden I clip near his tail and he lets out a blood curdling howl ....I had half way castrated him ......I was so upset , as well as he was . I called the vet to ask what to do , sobbing the whole time . Long story short we got him to the vet, and he finished the job ( under anesthesia thank god ) .Put in a couple stitches, trauma over. He still loves me ! In fact he is sitting next to me as I type .....but he does run and hide when he sees me with scissors .

Raises hand. I've done it too. Now I let the groomer do the 2 cockers. Have done the other dogs in the past.

Yes. Styptic powder in a little jar works the best instead of the styptic pen like guys use for shaving oopsies. Just dab some of that on the bleeding nail and it stops it.

They are so forgiving aren't they? God, you feel horrible when you do that.

And it's important to keep the nails trimmed otherwise the "quick" grows longer and the nails can't be clipped as close which causes upward pressure on their feet.

I've got two dogs: one's half staff and half pit bull which I got from a rescue centre after taking pity on her as no one wanted her. The other is hybrid American bulldog I got as a puppy as Mrs Clam thought she was cute. Anyway they had a major fight the other day some three years after living in peace. There was plenty of blood and I cleaned them up, but next day it was down the vets for the two of them, primarily to get some antibiotics. That's what I'd recommend. Any wounds then look for potential infection and treat accordingly. I've attempted to cut nails myself, usually with lots of aggrevation, but nothing beats walking them on tarmac. The nails soon wear down. Unless they have white nails, it's no easy task. Hope they're ok.

Oh Troubled Mind! How upsetting for you and your baby!

I'll tell you a story I don't like to think about, but I think this happens more than we know.

My mom use to raise beautiful prize winning Himalayan kittens. One of our relatives (mom's niece) asked for 2 which she was happy to give to this person as she was a true cat lover.

Only problem was that the father didn't believe in vet visits so promptly called over another brother who was infamous for putting pets (especially cats) down into a boot and then castrating them while their hind end was exposed at the top of the boot.

This really gets me sick because the father was a JW and should have known better. My Mother never forgave her brother for it.

My point being......you didn't mean to hurt, like my self, but the heart still hurts when we cause are pets pain.

    Love,

You clearly are a loving and compassionate pet owner. The trimming of dog nails really is something I dread, too, so I take the dog to the groomer or the vet to have it done. The vet gets closer because she knows how.

If the nails are an inch long and clicking, it is painful for the dog to walk with them. It forces the toes into an unnatural curved position. You might want to consider a vet visit to have the nails trimmed down properly. The dogs will be much more comfortable afterwards.

Once they are properly trimmed, you might be better able to maintain them yourself, but the dark nails are always tricky to cut sufficiently without quicking.

Good luck and happy dog owning!

    Susan
