I started a new thread to discuss the Knocking Forum on PBS being locked this afternoon. http://discussions.pbs.org/viewforum.pbs?f=203

I saw some real understanding begin to develop about the plight of former JW's and the strict control placed over the independent thinking of active JW's by the Watchtower Society. The moderator, Jen, seemed overwhelmed by the comments and Johnny Cip didn't cut her any slack, either- he got banned from posting! I can't imagine why.

Comments? Do you think it will open back up?- perhaps after the movie airs? or -Maybe- PBS pulled the plug on Knocking?

I dont think they will open it back up.

Many years ago, I went to a JW chat room at about.com. I was friends with one of the moderators. Of all the chatrooms about.com had the JW site had the most complaints. It was making staff nuts and they wanted to close it down.

The only thing that saved them is although they had the most complaints they had the most hits too. The moderator, a lifetime pioneer, fought to keep it open, based on the volume of hits.........of course she got her wishes, but the headaches as well

JW's and ex-JW's just have to be the most passionate people about their beliefs. I don't think PBS understands at all the can of worms they opened.

I do think they will keep the forum closed. Its just too much headache.

"can of worms" is just so very perfect. I know it's a cliche, but, hey, you get what you get!

Hre is the reason they gave for locking the forum yesterday-

    ----------------------------------------

"S ince launch, the lively debates seen here have been largely related to the Jehovah's Witnesses faith as a whole, with minimal posting and participation about the film KNOCKING.

The goal of the KNOCKING discussion forum, as listed in the Standards of Use, is to "discuss your responses to the film and Web site with us and with each other."

As a result, this forum will be inactive until the film's premiere on Independent Lens on May 22, 2007. At that time, we will welcome viewers to share their reactions and thoughts about the film."

    --------------------------

Well, I think it is just an excuse to keep their film from looking bad.

No, they don't. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.

    x-posting this:

Everyone please write to your local PBS station and theaters again and ask them not to air this propaganda piece.

List of local PBS stations airing this on May 22: http://www.knocking.org/PBS_Station_List.html

What I liked was that PBS lent a certain amount of credibility to the forum and some JW's were posting on it. If JW's and ex-JW's could just talk long enough and the JW's could not wriggle out of their handcuffs and leave, then I believe progress could have been made in changing the authoritarian structure of the WT leadership.

I think they will open it back up but it will be heavily moderated to only topics related to the film. I loved the witnesses being cornered on their participation with "apostates" and they completely rejected their teachings for a chance to spar over their faith.

As it is, my comments were mainly directed to the Knocking "Study Guide" and the Knocking "Myths and Realities", which were certainly relevant to the discussion forum about Knocking. I hope they will still accept my comments on these matters if/when the site reopens.

Noble but naive. It is like asking the fanatical Mujahadeen to just make nice and go home.
