Very good question!!
Ruth
Ummmmmmmmmmm................. let's see what I remember here.
He appointed the "faithful and discreet slave" CLASS which as been alive and active up to our day in dispensing spiritual food in due season to the individual members of that class.
(See, not all reside in the ivory castle)
That is the pat answer given if my leaky brain cells are working today.

Edited to add this: The FDS set up the Watchtower Corp. for legal purposes so they could proceed w/their work.
It's the dead man test. Don't put trust in a religion that has requirements a dead man could do.
A dead man doesn't believe in hell;
A dead man doesn't believe in trinity;
A dead man doesn't believe in immortality of the soul;
A dead man doesn't join the army;
A dead man doesn't vote;
A dead man doesn't fornicate;
A dead man doesn't read apostate literature;
A dead man doesn't go to college;
A dead man doesn't criticize the Governing Body.
more?
It seems like the only "beliefs" to survive have been the "dis-beliefs". . . dis-belief in hell, dis-belief in soul life, and dis-belief in trinity. That's a sad legacy that says just dis-beliefs survive.
That's very true Gary.
In fact that raises another question. Why would Jesus have appointed the WTS to be his sole channel on earth in 1919, if much of what they teach today differs so much from then?
The WTS published "The Finished Mystery" book in 1917. This book included Russell's belief that the great Pyramid in Egypt was God's stone witness. So in 1919 the WTS were still regarding the teachings of Russell as fact. Then they later abandoned much of Russell's beliefs.
Gary, that is such a great point! The JWs think that Jesus appointed the religion as a composite body, but none of that composite body is around anymore. The real truth is that not only did he appoint a group of people, but he also gave those people the power to select successors.
If time was going to continue on the way it did, then why did he not wait untill the last generation of peopple would arise rather than pick them out a number of generations to early?
This also reminds me of a question that has come to my mind often.
Even if there was a 'first century governing body', where are we ever told that they appointed successors???
What real thing that still exists today did Jesus appoint?
He appointed those that actively seek Spiritual truth. No, even if you believe CT Russel did that
Rutherford and Knorr changed to organizational preservation.
He appointed the International Bible Students. No, that's not their name anymore.
He appointed the publishers of Zion's Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence. No.
I give up.
A dead man doesn't accept a blood tranfusion.
A dead man doesn't salute the flag.
The Watchtower 15 December 1971 pages 748 - 762 (taken from Watchtower Library CD-ROM 1999)
9 In the year 1914 C.E., at the close of the "appointed times of the nations," the Lord Jesus Christ was installed in the heavenly Messianic kingdom. Thereafter he undertook an inspection of the "slave" or "steward" class on earth. (Matt. 25:14-30; Luke 19:11-27) He did find dedicated, baptized, anointed disciples on earth who, in spite of World War I and persecutions and other difficulties, were striving to serve the interests of Jehovah’s Messianic kingdom. They were endeavoring to feed in a spiritual way the faithful "domestics" or "body of attendants" of the now reigning Lord and Master, Jesus Christ
10 The facts of modern history show that in the year 1919 he revived these much afflicted disciples and gathered them together in a united body. Then he appointed them as his "slave" class "over all his belongings," that is, over all his royal interests at the earth. (Rev. 11:7-12) It was this active body of dedicated, anointed Christians who, in the summer of 1931, embraced a name to distinguish them from Christendom’s sects, namely, Jehovah’s witnesses.—Isa. 43:10-12; 44:8.
