Literal or figurative Heaven? Revelation Grand Climax - page 68

Here I sit, doing my hubby's study again. A little creative editing on the part of the Revelation writers caught my eye. We are studying the Laodiceans this week. The lukewarm dudes. With the insertion of some handy 'quotes', the Revelation writers handily turn a literal heaven in to a figurative one:

...But the materially rich Laodiceans are impoverished spiritually. They have few, if any, 'treasures stored up in heaven' (Matthew 6:22, 23, 33)....(Revelation, Its Grand Climax At Hand! p 68, pp 7)

Does the bible give any hint that we are talking about a figurative heaven, here? The liberties the writers take, I tell you, they boggle my mind.

    Greetings, jgnat!

My mind isn't quite in gear yet so as to give a precise reply to your question, but "my" JWs would never notice such a distinction. When I have opportunity to speak with them - they often asking advice or questions - I realize there is virtual acceptance of the [WT] written word. '"God's Organization" gives us proper food at the proper time.' When I bring up tidbits of information contrary to WT speak in the form of a question, I can see much of it hitting a mental barrier.
I do agree that the WT takes undue liberties; it's their perogative as God's "sole channel of communication." Ray Franz said that the majority of the Society's writers are the "other sheep," but the GB's purported review of ALL materials prior to publication gives them an "anointed touch." Yet with all the changes made to the REVELATION book, somebody sure must've been asleep on the job!
Your husband is lucky to have you - JWD likewise!

Very nice to have someone keep me company in the early hours, CoCo.

I don't think the average JW would recognize a proper bible study if it slapped them in the face.

I swear, the JW's are as bad as the United Church at fitting the bible to their social agenda.

You are right, JW's DO NOT STUDY eh Bible, they read, regurgitate, repeat the words in a paragraph in one of the Society's books. The Rev. is one of the worst.

I have not been to a Book Study since they started studying again. The seven trumpets my *&^%^&!!!

I'm still wondering why the seven trumpets prophecy was fulfilled before the seven seals were opened and before the four horsemen. Something seems out of order.

    jgnat:

If you read the paragraph in order, you missed the Scripture mentioned at Mat.6:19-21.

This brings it all into perspective.

Maybe if you let hubby do his own studying, he would progress better.

    Rosalee and Jgnat:

The passage in question refers neither exclusively to a "figurative" heaven nor a "literal". It refers to something in between, or both, if you will, but to be honest, more to the "literal" than the figurative.

19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The 21st verse is what the WTS can use to imply that the "heaven" in question is "figurative", but the preceding two verses certainly shows that the "heaven" in question is also figurative! The "spiritual" heaven-part does not really appear before G-John.

AND: If the faithful Jehovahs Witness would bother reading the preceding chapter, chapter 5, he would see that:

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

...which shows clearly how the "heaven" is a LITERAL one, in which the christian wil receive his reward, just as the prophets before you (who died, as a result of persecution!). So perhaps, Rosalee, if you would bother reading the entire book in context, you would "progress better".

    hr:

The reason I mentioned Matthew 6:19-21 was to show Janet that it was figurative.

The preceding chapter is speaking of a literal heaven.

    What's your problem???

Is there even such a thing as a 'figurative heaven'? Examples, please.

It's always symbolic or figurative if it doesn't fit the Society's doctrine.
