First impressions of Dallas

Hi all - well I got here a few hours ago. The flight started off well, but I got over Greenland and suddenly got very ill - high temperature, and nausea. I called the flight attendants who moved to the back and in the process I fainted. Next thing I knew half an hour had passed and I was on the floor in the galley with an oxygen mask and a blonde air hostess slapping my face. Most of that scenario is quite attractive normally - blonde girl /mask/ slapping!

Anyway after a while I was okay to go back to my new row - which I got all to myself. The flight was less than half full anyway. But quite a scare and they were talking about turning the flight around. Its the same as happened to me coming back from Barcelona - really weird - never had that before with flights.

Anyway it took more than hour to get through immigration which was annoying, but there were lots of hot men in the queue to look at.

Taxis here cost ridiculous amounts. I got into the cab at the airport and asked how much to go to my hotel which is two miles away - I mean I could have walked it if it wasnt so humid and I hadnt spent 13 hours travelling already. He said $22!!! that 11 pounds - crazy for two miles - it would cost 4 pounds max in London. Anyway that pissed me off and I wasnt in the best of tempers anyway.

The staff at the hotel were friendly and told me the nearest bar was - next door at the Sheraton. I took twenty minutes following a map to locate my room!

I thought sod it - no point unpacking and headed straight for the Sheraton. And finally I felt welcome, the lady at the bar cheekily asked me for ID and I said you get a big tip for that! She probably knew that anyway but its 8 years since I have been to the states nearly and I got asked for ID then quite reasonably but to be asked at 32 well lets say that soothed my rattled nerves and travellers impatience as I sipped on a ice cold Corona out my the pool.

I've showered and changed and am going back to the bar for a little while but its 11.30 pm my time and its been a long day!

It was sunny when I arrived and soooo humid - no one mentioned the humidity! I didnt bring an umberella and its chucking it down like we dont see in Britain, but everything smells fresh and beautiful - yes even here by the freeway.

One drink will probably knock me out so I doubt I will be at the bar too long. And then its back to my room and sleep - well earned sleep!

Will check back later if I get time.

Welcome to Dallas, Crumpet! Hope you feel well the rest of your time here. I think there's a minimum fare from the airport, which is why you got hit with that steep charge. When it's time to leave, there are shuttles you can take back to the airport. Maybe your hotel has one, or they can help you locate a company that runs a shuttle. We had a little storm blow through here last night, which is why it's fresh now. Give it a few days though. ;-)

Yeah some areas got 100 mph winds, but it was just a little storm. :)

Im glad you made it there fine, despite your in-flight illness. To me Dallas isnt really that humid, it's more humid here on the east coast. I know that Dallas people talk about the humidity there, but really if you travel about 200 miles east to Texarkana Texas, the humididty is much worse there, like a steambath.

Interesting experiences did you ask any other taxi drivers about their fare to the hotel? It may have been just the first one that was charging that much to rip you off that's how they are everywhere, and don't they have taxi meters in the USA?

I also can't understand why airplanes have to go over Greenland, so far North, when flying to the USA. Wish you have a great time in Dallas.

    Welcome to America Crumpet.

I wonder why you felt ill on the air plane like this.... You must be a very emotional person.

Taxis shouldn't be so expensive. Now you know why I travel by car all the way...lol

Enjoy your trip, and I'm drinking a beer right now thinking of you.

It usually says on the outside of the cab how much per mile they charge . Don't think it's more than 2-3 dollars a mile . That's absurd to charge you that much. Can't believe nobody picked you up at the air port ..................
