By any chance have you noticed a lot of bees in your area lately? There's bees called carpenter bees that tunnel through wood to make their nest. As a kid, I thought they ate the wood, because if you walk close to a nest (about 5-6 feet) when it's quiet (like at 3 am) you can hear a munching, scritchy/scratchy kind of sound. I later read that they actually just chew it up to make tunnels, and spit out the sawdust or use it to help build their nest. They look a lot like bumblebees.

Could also be mice as suggested by others, termites, or even squirrels. Squirrels sometimes decide to nest in attics or eaves and other roof spaces of buildings, especially if there's a nice little highway for them to use like a power line near a vent or tree branch that touches the roof. I remember not so long ago there was a post by someone here about a mystery bird that managed to get get down their chimney and scare the crap out of them by making noise in the basement-another possible explanation.

Carpenter ants. It happened to me and you could hear them very well chewing away when it was real quiet in the morning hours.

    Yes, I'm ok...just don't wanna sleep in here again...lol.

The scratching went on til about 5:30am. then it quit. I layed back down with my German Shepherd, my sword, and my phone next to me. I must have fallen back to sleep because it's now almost 9am. I still don't know what it was. I checked (since I heard my neighbor come out) and I didn't see any sign of it.

It was too loud to be a mouse. And besides, it was right out in the open in front of my door. I could hear it pulling at the rubber that's around the door to keep the wind out. I checked it and there are a few torn slits in the rubber seal with a few pin point holes as well. So it's a bigger animal than a mouse. I'm leaning more towards a cat now. Why did that cat come all the way up 3 stories and to my particular apartment, I have no clue. I have seen a jet black cat follow Zach home (he loves animals so much) but would only sit at the bottom of the steps on the ground floor. Maybe he watch where Zach went and remembered?

Still, I'm going to the manager's office today and going to get them to get those lights working. It's total black out there from where it's shielded from the street. I'm also hoping the cat (or whatever beast was there) doesn't come back. ESPECIALLY at 3am. That's so freaky.

I'm still shaking over this experience...

Oh boy, are you telling me those people NEVER stop...Yikes...now that IS spooky..

We do have a ton of bees but this was loud that you could hear it in the back bedroom. I tried to sleep in my son's room but heard it very clear. Both of my cats were at the door hissing, so it wasn't them. My dogs tend to not even care. And like I said before, there are a few cut marks on the rubber seal outside the door.

    Dear Freedom Frog,

Glad you're all right. Things that go bump - or scritch-scratch - in the night can surely be unnerving. Speaking of movies, I'd be reluctant to look under the door after seeing Mel Gibson's reaction [mine, too!] when he looked under the pantry door in "Signs." Of course, the weather stripping would prevent your peering under the entry door. Get those lights back on!

Sounds like a mouse or a rat. When I was a kid I had one in my bedroom wall and it would chew and scratch at the wall all hours of the day and night.

Yes, a rodent that small can make that much noise.

I'd call the apartment office and ask maintenance to repair the lights and send out an exterminator.

    (((((FF)))))

Hey, if you had a German Shepherd and a sword, why didn't you just gird up your bosom, grab your sword, fling open the door and with a crazy look in your eyes scream, "I'm ready to fokking party"!

Believe me, nobody messes (or parties) with somebody that they think is crazy.
