in a restaurant - gazpacho is my all time favorite.
at home, any home made soup is good. I recently found a recipe for homemade tomato soup that doesn't taste like catsup or barbecue sauce or marinara. It's from the South Beach cook book and soooooo good. -

and this one:
4 cups crushed tomatoes (I used a little more--a 28 oz can and a 14 oz can)
4 c chicken broth
Simmer these together over medium heat for 30 min. Puree in small batches in blender or food processor with a few basil leaves.
Add:
1 cup heavy cream
lemon juice, sugar, and balsamic vinegar to taste - about a teaspoon each
salt and pepper to taste
Heat through, being careful not to boil. -

I never really liked any soups out of a tin but home made are great and easy to make, and in the winter there is nothing better than a hot soup. I like fish soup with potato, onion and spices. In France they also use croutons with grated cheese dipped in the fish soup and the flavours mix very well.
French onion soup is also very nice.
