Question about Settlement of Child Abuse Cases.

I have two points to make that I feel are valid. Correct me if I'm wrong. 1) Where are the funds coming from to pay out these settlements? If they are coming from the Worldwide Work and the selling off of properties funds, then this is a misappropriation of funds. Funds that you and I gave over the years to be used to support the preaching work. These funds cannot be used to pay off criminal acts committed by the members of Watchtower Society.
If the Governing Body has no conscience about disfellowshipping victims of child molestation who dare to speak out, you think they give a rat's ass about where they're going to get the money to pay the victims off?
The Governing Body is complicit because of it's policy on Child Abuse. So, each single person, Governing Body members, the individual Pedofile, should be paying out of their own deep pockets and none of the settlement money should be coming out of The World Wide Work funds.
That's true. However, my understanding is that the Governing Body members themselves have no money to speak of. Their salaries are probably minimal and everything else: their living accomodations, their cars, food, travel, health, etc. are all paid for by donations, not money made out to them personally. Or at least not that I'm aware of. To try and sue them as individuals would be an exercise in futility as they don't have personal wealth.
Misappropriation of funds is considered a crime, is it not? Do I have a valid legal point or not? Can they use monies that you and I gave for a special work to pay off these settlements.
Yes and no. While there is a contribution box at the back of each Hall, people can leave stocks, bonds, cash, or jewellry to the Society without any specific instructions as to how or where it's to be used. Unless it is written that it's to be used towards "the Worldwide Witnessing Work", the Society can basically use it anyway they want to with no accountability whatsoever.
2) Each and everyone involved in these child abuse acts, the Pedofiles and the enablers, that is each member of the Governing Body who are complicit because of their policy on the Child Abuse cases should be given jail sentences not just paying off individuals with a gag order.
I agree whole-heartedly with you. In any other situation, both the elders and the Governing Body members who hushed it all up would be guilty of Obstruction of Justice and be given stiff sentences. I think it's time the laws of the land were changed so that 'clergy' cannot hide behind their religion like a bunch of cowardly lions, in order to conceal criminal activity. Perhaps a letter campaign to our MP's (in Canada) and your Congressmen (USA) is in order.

I was reading Simon's post about MAD on the thread and all of a sudden the thread disappeared! What's up?

This is the whole idea behind the WTS's preference for people making Voluntary Donations to the World Wide Work rather than to specified ventures.
If anyone remembers the instructions that were sent to congregations in the wake of the tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, they specifically stated that donations should be directed to the World Wide Work, not specifically for the relief efforts in those natural disasters. The WTS wants to be able to use the money they receive in the manner that THEY see fit, not in the manner that the donors want to believe it is being used.

I found an old article detailing some of the cases settled. One of the abusers wound up dieing in jail. The link is below but warning: Sexually explicit details are given.

I see your point, but I think it would be a logistic nightmare to try and get them on misappropriation of funds. Let's say I'm a rich widow with no children to leave my estate to. In my Will, I leave everything to the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Let's say it's worth $2 million. I didn't specify that the money was to go towards the WWW, so that means they can spend it wherever they want and it's perfectly legal. So they spend it on paying off the victims. Is this illegal?

Mary,
Unless there is a specific use mentioned by the donor, the WTS can use the money any way they like.
Maybe we should test the theory to see if we can get them on misappropriation of funds by sending them a bunch of $10 donations, specifically intended for Ted Jaracz's hemorrhoid relief. Keep copies of the cheques, and send them all to a forensic accountant to see where the money goes.
