Do The Clothes Really Make The Man?

Perhaps, the question should be rephrased to read, “Do the clothes really make the person?”
During the days of my being a Jehovah’s Witness heavy emphasis was placed on clothing,
grooming and in general, being clean cut.

How Do You View Personal Grooming?

Some years ago, a brother approached the elders wanting to divorce his wife because she either
rarely bathed or did not like to bathe. Personally, I still keep the old standard of being clean-cut.

However, some individuals may feel differently. Does it make a difference if an individual keeps their
nails trim, haircut and body clean or does it make a difference if he or she looks like a suspect in a
    police lineup?

    Respectfully,

    The Wanderer

I know it doesn''t apply, but you're talking about clothing.

I always thought, that JW's were those 2 young guys riding around on bikes dressed in white dress shirts, black pants, backpack and a helmet.

For years. Then I found out from the JW's at work it was the mormons. I thought it was funny.

If you listen to the houndingcounsel from the hounderselders, it does. You are nothing unless you have a WHITE dress shirt with a T shirt under it, a dark suit coat on top of that, pants that are matching, black shoes that shine, hair that is exactly 2" long, a belt, a fancy leather service bag, a $15 call book, and you have had a bath or shower just before going to the meeting or out in service. Of course, they expect you to stay looking fresh all day long, without a break, when it is 100 degrees out.

And let's not forget that little card that is to be worn at all times during the assembly and between sessions this summer. That card has your congregation name and your personal name, and it identifies you as one of Jehovah's Witlesses. Without it, you might as well be nothing. And the badge holder had better be one of those that came from the Kingdumb Hell, not from an office supply store (after all, they need you to support their arrangement and not Office Depot or Staples).

Sometimes the clothes make the man look better. Sometimes he looks better without them

I view personal grooming as just that-PERSONAL!

Cleanliness is a different matter. Don't think I would appreciate a bad smelling person that was just too lazy to clean themselves.

But I happen to like long hair on guys and beards. Never could see what the problem was. Jesus wore a beard and so did their real founder, Russell.

    The Wanderer,

My perspective is much different from your own.

I have modified my body to appear much different from other people.

This often results in fast judgements being passed down upon me.

However, do the large holes in my ears inhibit me from working hard? Hardly.

Do tattoos make incapable of love? Certainly not.

Do subcutaneous metal bars in the back of my head make me less of a person? I don't believe so.

    But some would say otherwise.

My appearance doesn't make me who I am.

But a judgemental attitude does alter other people's personalities.

Hygeine of course, is a different matter.

    Respectfully,

    RichieRich

Nice post, WTWizard! Welcome to JWD! Clothes make the man, yes, at least in my neck of the woods. Socal is very appearance-focused. If you're not in good shape and sporting some trendy threads, you're not likely to get noticed. Of course there is our nice little beach-bum chic we've got going on, surfer style and whatnot, but if you don't look good you're (not getting ) screwed.
