Watchtower Bait and Switch

OK, so I will attempt to finish the service topic. I have been out in service, and know what it's like. I get there at 8:50 or so, hoping that no one would show up. Predictably, someone would show up right under the wire. And others would show up late, occasionally not prepared. Often many would have their coffee.

Once it gets going, they would take their time leaving. The Society tells us that we should meet at 9, spend 10 minutes going through the Daily Text and arrangements, and be knocking on the first door at 9:15. This is extremely rare. People are sluggish in getting out into the territory. Disorder and chaos often reign after the daily text (where comments are usually few). They take all day to decide who is going with who, and then after the prayer there are always those who have to do something. Tidying up, using the facilities, and getting materials are common now. By the time we are in the territory, it is often 9:30 or even later.

Then once in the territory, after the scramble to get the time started, there is little or no further rush. People walk at less than 2 MPH. They finish a street segment, and get in the car and take 15 minutes to rest up. Those warm-up breaks often last even longer. Then there are the calls: driving all around the city is common. I have rarely seen the whole group eager to go onto the second street after finishing one section.

Coffee breaks are usually welcome. I have seen whole groups that, after finishing about 15 houses on one segment, spend another two hours staggering errands. Coffee breaks, gas stops, someone forgetting their medication or their glasses, return visits that the person is not at home, stops at the bank to pay a bill, and the ubiquitous visit to the hospital or nursing home to visit others are all common and I have seen them staggered so we got little time actually going door to door. And then there was the time we went to a large bookstore to preach. I was supposed to place tracts with customers (a good way to get kicked out of the store). However, I simply went to where there were no customers and browsed the books! I placed zero that morning.

That is how much fun service is. And they wonder why some people are tempted to bring a Game Boy Advance or a Nintendo DS and play Pokemon. What I often brought was a calculator: it was more fun playing with that calculator than it was going from door to door. I wonder what they would have done if I had been playing Pokemon instead--especially if it was my turn to come up with the call, only to have me paying more attention to catching that Kyogre. (Yes, I got the Kyogre. The call--well, that's another matter.)
