Well, Tuesday was the day for my laser eye surgery. To be honest - it really wasn't that bad at all! For all those that commented on my other thread about being chicken - if it's something you are thinking about - I say do it!
I went in and they re did several of the tests they did the first day - just to confirm things. Then it was alot of waiting! Finally they brought me and two other women to the waiting area just outside the surgery room. There we were given lots of drops in our eyes to numb them. Finally I was called in. The surgeon sat down with me and discussed a few things with me first. Then it was onto the table. More drops to numb the eyes. My left eye was taped shut first. Then my right eye was taped open, something else was put on it to keep the eye open as wide as possible. Then the microkeratome was put on my eye with suction (this causes you to lose your vision temporarily), and the flap is cut on the cornea. That was removed, my eye was irrigated and the flap was folded out of the way. Then the laser zapped my eye - three bursts of several seconds. My eye was taped shut and the same procedure was done to my left eye.
There was no pain involved with the laser. The only freaky part was the microkeratome - it really didn't hurt when my cornea was cut - it a bit unpleasant and kinda scary - but no pain.
I was led to a recovery room, given a pair of dark glasses (I'm pretending they are cool glasses!! lol) and left to rest for a bit. Then they expain the drops you need to administer, and when, and some more waiting. After about 45 min to an hour they put in some more numbing drops (thank god!!) and the surgeon check things. I had an eyelash that he had to remove before it got under the flap.
When I was leaving I thanked the Dr., and he said "no thank you, this really is my pleasure to do!"
I pretty much slept most of the rest of the day. Hubby would wake me up when it was time for more drops. I have to wear special eye sheilds for the next little while while sleeping - that's attractive! lol And dark glasses whenever I go outside for the next little while.
I went back yesterday morning for another check up - was told everything looked good. I was abit concerned because I could not see things as clearly out of my left eye - but was told that's normal, my vision will come and go for the next little while while things are healing. There is another appointment next Tuesday, then a one month appt and a three month appt, and at that time they should be able to tell me what my vision is (hopefully 20/20!).
There really was very little pain, and what pain I did have was helped with Advil.
So, for those that were/are considering it - I say go in for the initial consultation and see if you are a candidate!!
