I had radial keratotomy done with the scalpel about 10 years ago. I had to start wearing glasses again about 2 years ago. I have triple lenses. One for reading, one for computer reading, and one for everything else. I was nearsighted prior to the radial keratotomy and didn't need the glasses for reading. After the radial keratotomy, I didn't need any glasses. Now, I need my glasses for everything. It's strange reaching for your glasses before you even get out of bed!

JWdaughter,
They gave me an ativan before the surgery. It really didn't seem to kick in until on the way home, I couldn't stay awake or keep my eyes open, which is a good thing. Like I said, there was no pain to the surgery, you are just laying there looking at the flashes of the laser.
MsMcDucket - I was told that eventually I'll need reading glasses as well. The surgery doesn't correct that unfortunately.

I had mine done two years ago and it was the best thing ever. I had terrible vision and really bad astigmatism in both eyes.
I was totally unprepared to sit up after the operation and be able to read the computer screen across the room. My eyes were sore for a few days but I found the Refreshing Eye gel worked wonders. My night vision is fine, still have some haloing on wet nights but not enough to scare me. I find some stores make my eyes really dry. Canadian Tire, big grocery stores..I think it has something to do with the fumes and lights but that is a problem I had before as well.
I still reach to take my glasses off when I get in the shower. Still freaks me out that I can see the bottles of shampoo and read the labels.
I dove into a pool for the first time in years. Last time I did that I missed the end of the diving board and took a nasty fall cause my depth perception was all screwed up.
My kids don't even remember me wearing glasses.
I also threw out all my make up and started fresh to reduce the chance of accidentally introducing bacteria into my eyes. I also had to get lessons in applying makeup.
Walking in the rain and feeling the drops on my face was weird.
I went thru LasikMD and know a few other people who used them as well and we are all very pleased.
My vision is now 20/15.

This was one of my lifes plans. I was intending to store funds for a family member to get this done when the science came up to par. I think there are still certain prescriptions for which it is not effective and I'm not sure it could help even with todays advances. Additionally my circumstances have changed dramatically in the wrong direction. Just one of a long list of good intentions I,FOR ONCE, let myself believe would become a future reality. The best laid plans of mice and men....

I'm still really scared to try it. I looked into radial keratotomy, and rejected the idea because of exactly what MsMcDucket says.
My vision is so bad they always told me I'd need glasses even with surgery, so it was interesting to read lenny's experience.
Thanks for the update...maybe I'll finally get brave one day. I sure hate my glasses. Always have.

I'm in exactly the same boat as Lenny. I had laser surgery about five years ago and my right eye is now 20/20 and my left eye needs a very minute topup. Even if it had been far less successful, in the very least I would have been looking forward to much thinner lenses and a much wider choice of glasses frames As the lens in the eye stiffens with age most people eventually need glasses for reading, but that's a different issue from a corneal surgery to improve distance vision. I have no regrets whatsoever!!!
