Richie, both Popeyes and Bojangles are equally good in my opinion.

I'm not going to be a conspirator in this devil talk.

You're all loose in the head! Bojangles always wins!

Thank you for the laughs, RR. I need them desperately right now.

Junction, I have a root in Kentucky. My mom's mamma was from K. I don't know which town, but her grandmother owned the general store and was the post mistress. And fried chicken? My grandma could kick anyone's a$$ in the kitchen when it came to southern cooking. My mother ran a close second and her fried chicken was very good.

I'm living up here in Michigan where food is bad, very bad. The restaurants, even the chains, are pitiful. I miss the food and the characters of the south. I do not miss the hot humid summers. If you want some quiet, lackluster personalities and bad food, SW Michigan is the place to be. But I must say they are polite, nice and they sure take pride in their lawns.

omg I can't believe I have missed out on this! There is a Bojangles about 20 minutes away from me in another city, but i'm in that area all the time. I must try them asap.

I have been to Michigan, and it's a nice place to visit (in the summer), but I wouldnt want to live there. My Dad lives in Northern Michigan, and the landscape looks alot like Mississippi, lots of tall pine trees.

My roots run deep in Kentucky, and that will always be my home. It would be interesting to find out where your great grandma was from.

Ah, good ole Bojangle's Famous Chicken 'n Biscuits.

Richie, you're fortunate because the Raleigh/eastern NC stores are owned by the largest franchisee of Bojangle's who happens to be the son-in-law of the founder of the chain(before it was sold to become a big corporation in Charlotte) and he runs the best stores out of all the franchisees and even the corporate stores.

I met the founder of Bojangle's years ago (I think he's deceased now) and he told us that the recipe for his biscuits came from a U.S. army cookbook and he modified it slightly and used superior products. They're fries are the best and so is the iced tea.

When the founder sold the company, the new corporation tried to change things. They tried to find shortcuts on making biscuits, they dropped the fresh brewed iced tea to a bag-in-the-box product. It didn't take long for them to realize that they had f-ed up. They went back to the tried and true methods as perfected by the founder and instead concentrated on how to move the product more quickly through the process and how to streamline the packing stations without messing with the recipes and the taste.

The thing about the Bo is that when everything is running smoothly and managed well, you get great food quickly. A true fast food chicken joint. But when mis-managed and out of sync, ordering and waiting can be a nightmare. There are several stores where I live. I know which ones to avoid and which ones to go to.

I've seen the chain grow from a minor NC chain to try to become a major player on the East Coast only to self-destruct and collapse back into only NC/SC and eastern TN. But now in the last few years, they have finally found franchisees willing to take them further west in TN, down to GA and FL, up into VA and WV and now even in New Jersey.

We had one of those drive thru only ones in Georgia. My daughter's boyfriend worked there. He told us it was just a nasty place as far as health codes went. We got sick a few times from their dirty rice and from the chicken.

Mrs. Winner's, well, it's not that good either, when it comes to cleanliness. Once I recall someone got sick in the entry way of the store and we asked someone to mop up. When we went to leave, it was still there.

If you ever come to Jenison, be sure to check out Chicken Likin. The batter is excellent, but sometimes the white meat cuts are tough and dry. They serve very good pasta salads.

From what I've been told by people at work, the Bojangles in Alcoa went out of business in the early-mid 90's. If they have been around here all these years, then they do one lousy job of advertising.
