    what's the sputnik thing?

Ray Franz mentioned in Crisis of Conscience that in 1980 Schroeder, Klein, and Suiter proposed changing the start of "this generation" from 1914 to 1957. This was the year that the "Space Age" began.

I had taken creative libery and a mocking tone with the "sputnik thing" to link it to the teaching about the King Of The North. The Watchtower has not said that Sputnik was the King Of The North -- yet.

Your comments remind me of an old WT cliche about not retaining what we read.

I want to make a joke, but please don't take it personally candidlynuts! I am chuckling with you, not at you.

    First off, Nathan said:

The same deep conviction can be found in some UFO enthusiasts, in some mental patients and in some of the ranks of Scientology, to name a few. Sincere ignorance proves nothing.

I don't apreciate being lumped in with mental patients and Scientologists. Just kidding.

    Next, Blondie said:

Some cult "leaders" do, some don't.

That's gotta be right. There are some "Boy Scouts" on the Governing Body who feel that the 2/3rds vote is God's directions.
They feel that "this generation" was out there so long because Jehovah used it to gather the other sheep, and only
delayed the end to save more people. (Don't try to fit that into the doctrine, just wait for God to change the doctrine.)
If they doubt a doctrine, they know that Jehovah will guide the Governing Body.

There's gotta be some who know that Holy Spirit did not put them on that body. Some had to notice the struggle for control
between the committees that went on for years. Some of the newer ones on the GB might feel that they weren't qualified, but
felt that Jehovah gave them a privilege- then the reality of the GB told them that nobody is qualified. I have to imagine that
every member read Ray Franz's books, and some know there's truth in it, but they need the retirement benefits.

I believe ANYONE can delude themselves. Especially if you accept that God has chosen YOU to be His rep.

I think the Governing Body parallels "Saturday Night Live."

It was really great in the 70's. Everyone was so excited to be there, giving it their all.
After awhile, it became routine for members.

As time went on, the door started revolving (mostly for deaths on the GB) and some
of the new cast members were great, some were not so great. Eventually, they saw it
    as routine again.

Today, it's totally lame no matter what they try. Nobody is really trying to make it good.
They just collect the paychecks and enjoy the celebrity (giving talks here and there while
everybody bows to them) and go through the motions. SNL is not cancelled because it
still brings in advertisers, and all they got to replace it is videos. The GB is not replaced
because they don't have anything to replace them, and they still bring in dollars and pecos.
