    Top 50 Countries
With Highest Proportion of Atheists / Agnostics
    (Zuckerman, 2005)

Below is a list of the top fifty countries containing the largest measured percentage of people who identify as atheist, agnostic, or non-believer in God. These figures do not necessarily represent the number of people who are identify themselves as "atheists." For example, in Estonia in 2004, 49% of people surveyed said they did not believe in God. At the same time, only 11% of people in the country identified themselves as atheists.

Anyone know of any reasons for this? Has this been studied? What say you European ex-dubs?

    They're more educated?

They've dealt with the ill effects of religion for much longer and had wars on their own soil prompted by it?

Interesting list, for what stats are worth...

I'd say it's a complex history involving many other socio-political factors along education...

From my perspective, of course, the question is rather, why so few Atheists in the USA?

(I'm quite surprised at the low figure for China, though, and I wonder how it has been reached.)

No education, the get tested to the hilt so they never get a good education until colledge. Which most can't afford.

No offense 5go, but with that spelling, and sentence structure, I wouldn't be talking about lack of education on anyone else's part. I trust you were just trying to make a point here...

Jason, (Of the tired of all of the USA bashing class), and yes, a proud agnostic.

In the 2001 census, 72% of Britain claimed to be Christian and 15% claimed no religion - so there has either been a massive plummet in 3 years or the survey results may not be reliable (I'd be inclined to say the census gives a better picture because it covers every single member of the population).

America doesn't have much history...yet. America has friends above and below and oceans as a buffer on the east and west.

In Europe the long, long history is mostly a series of bloody clashes rooted in religious differentiations.

Religion gives justification for action. The action, in Europe, has often been religious war, persecution, torture, Inquisition, coercive statecraft, alienations, etc.

Religion has been exposed to Falsification over and over and over.

A good analogy is Germany finding itself on the bitter end of statecraft as a result of its penchant for military aggression. Today's German citizen eschews ideology which is militaristic and cannot abide neo-Nazi grassroots re-emergences.

Europe has seen so much two-faced, transparently venal, power-grabbing religious influence it has produced a cognative horror in the intelligentsia.

America is still drunk with the (failed) idea of the 2nd Coming and perfectionism.

Just wanted to add something else to what the other posters have said. The Americans are brilliant at marketing. From over here it seems that interest in religion in the US is maintained through every possible marketing angle. I know it's self perpetuating but I really do think it's a factor. Advertising works!

Then again. Speaking of advertising, we have Charles Darwin on our £10 note.

Makes me wonder why Canada is at the 14-30% atheist mark.
