Aren't you concerned about what effect this may have on you and your loved ones?

    Effect on others?

Eating with my religious aunt: "Are you gonna pray?" Umm no...u know why I can't. "You are not gonna at least say thanks." Sorry Aunt, not at this moment. "Don't blame the JW's about this." $hit.

On dating: "So you are not religous?" Nope. "Well don't go off the deep end and do crazy $hit."

    Concerned? not really.

Funnily it reminds me of a short experience.

During the last months I was in Bethel (I had already given my resignation letter but I had been asked to stay a few months longer to finish a translation work), I went for a week-end with a Bethelite friend to his congregation in Southern France. There was another close friend of mine who was eventually df'd for "apostasy" a few months later together with me. But then we were still officially JWs, and Bethelites at that. There was nothing "official" in the visit, but we did comment a few times in the Watchtower study -- nothing provocative or even remarkable, but already so different from the average that people did notice something. I guess the brother who offered the concluding prayer must have been somewhat upset because his prayer was particularly affirmative, as if he wanted to close the doors and windows we had (almost unwittingly) opened (I remember the opening sentence, "thank you Jehovah because we have the truth" ).

We later spent the evening with a group of young JWs, most of them childhood friends of our local buddy. Quite a free discussion about a lot of things, where we shared about what really mattered to us and what did not. When we left one of the fellows told me, "you're incredibly open-minded; I do hope you can remain like that, I'm afraid not." As a matter of fact I knew he was right. I could not remain like that very long as a JW. Nor as a member of any club probably.

    it's a realization.

no literal God is going to come make it all better.

turning inward to one's Self, and discovering God there, germinates benevolent compassion for all living things (not just humans).

and from inner peace, comes outer peace. peace with one's self, others, physics, genetics, cosmology, mythology, ideas... if you want planetary peace, you must become peace, individually, regardless of what others are becoming/being around you.

    tetragod

ps: i have met loving, liberated and compassionate people in both camps (and all the little one man camps dotted between the two).
