Well, last night (Thursday), from 8pm till midnight, Sonic had a free root beer float for anyone who went.

We went. We being my wife, her son and her mom.

We first drove over to a local Sonic. Got there around 10 after 8. It was packed, with people waiting to get in to the parking lot. I immediately aborted that idea, and we headed out to Castroville, which is about 15 minutes away.

When we got there, it was not that crowded, and we parked and got out, preferring to sit under their canopy, enjoying the evening breeze. We ordered a soda to go along with our root beer floats - just so that we wouldn't be there for the free stuff.

It was pretty nice. About 4 of the gals there (carhops?) were dressed in vintage clothing, wearing poodle skirts (from the 50's). One was even wearing roller skates (no, not roller blades).

I went and got my wifes' digital camera, and took her photo. Later, we got all 4 of them to stand there together and took their photo.

It was a lot of fun. Did yall go? Did yall get your free root beer float?

    Regards,

    Jim TX

    Jim:

I love their onion rings....I had a root beer float the other day at Sonic, very good. And they gave me coupon for a free 10 oz. float for another visit...havent used it yet. Not sure 10oz is enough...probably have to order a 2nd one....just have to make sure I use it before it expires....

I like it when the girls use the roller blades/skates...only time I give a tip and a decent one at that...I figure that takes talent.....other wise I go through drive up.

In my area there is another place that has makes root beer on the premises so I am sure their floats are even better. How about A&W? Anyone remember those drive in places? They had the frosty glass mugs....you could buy root beer by the gallon? They would even refill your container? I use to have one of those "baby mugs" they had for the kids. Now all I see are the chain version of the A&W...all sanitized no drive in like sonic...usually with a Long John Silver attached...

Thanks for the fire that started the trip down memory lane..and a nice non Borg related thread topic.....

As a kiddo, I barely remember my dad taking the whole bunch of us to a place called 'The Black Cow'. It used to be next door to a restaurant called 'The Pig Stand'. hahahahahaha

The hazy memory I have, has us there in our old '52 DeSoto suburban - which had 3 seats in it. Long brown car made with heavy gauge metal.

Anyway... he'd get us root beers there. He'd order 7 cows, 2 calves (the calves were small sized drinks for the young ones). They came in frosted glasses like you describe, and the gals would bring it out on one of those trays that balanced on the window. We didn't get to go very often cuz we were poor, but we always looked forward to it when we did.

"Thanks for the fire that started the trip down memory lane."

No - thank YOU! *wide grin*

"and a nice non Borg related thread topic"

Anyone who knows/remembers me from Tim Campbell's old forum, knows that I can spin quite a non-jw-related yarn.

BUT DO YOU HAVE CUSTARD???? When I moved here from Iowa that was a huge surprise and very delicioso!! Very creamy and rich and fattening....... LOL

Ah.......the days of hoola hoops, pop beads, saddle shoes, jacks, drive-in theatres, Thunderbird sports cars, juke boxes and diners............................

Hey Juni. We lived in North Carolina and Kentucky for several years. Had sonic just down the street. Poodle skirts, rollerskates the whole shabang. It's a southern thing.
