Over the years, we've had an assortment of cats and dogs. We now have a chihuahua. He is absolutely the best natured and most affectionate pet we have ever had. He's also quite a unique character.

    Same situation here.

    I love my chihuahua.

We currently have a rat terrier . Very attached to his humans . Can be over protective and VERY playful and active . when we visit my elderly dad he sits in his lap the whole time . Tons of personality and smart .

Chihuahua's remind me of a little, frail mexican man. Always shakin and shivering.

I own a boxer but that's not a small dog....so....when she dies, I'm going for a boston terrier because they are like a boxer to me. Plus their funny and make you laugh.

We have a long haired chihuahua and love her to pieces. Out of three dogs she is my favorite, it's really hard to explain to someone how cool chihuahua's are until they own one.

Thanks for the responses everyone....I am still partial to those silly little Mexican dogs.....please keep the replies coming.

I have two over 100 pound Dobermans and I swear the personalities are not much different than the little guys.

They need extensive love, no outside by themselves, they shiver and shake in too cold air, and wilt in the heat.

"When I leave them they are so sad and go nuts with happiness when I come in the front door.

My dad has a Bichon Frise and if you like fairly boring dogs that don't require a lot of attention then that might be for you. My dad's Bichon sleeps, goes to the bathroom, and eats and that's about it. She doesn't shed though and that's good.

I have 2 pug dogs and I love the attention that they give me. They constantly play like puppies even though they are 4 and 5 years old. They will follow you around with their toys, lay on you, lick you, and in general, they really like to be around you. They do shed a lot and need a lot of attention, kind of like a small child. But they are by far the most fun dogs I've ever had. And I've had many kinds over the years. So my vote is for pugs.

    I have two small dogs.

One is a Rat Terrier, and he is great. Very even tempered, not too loud or restless and a real lap type dog. Great personality. Likes to "pretend fight" with me.

The other is a problem child. She is a Jack (Jane) Russell. She is a bitch. Absolutely food driven. Good watch dog. Smarter than me. She is like what I imagine a Tasmanian Terror to be. More energy than you can imagine. Foot prints on the ceiling type energy.

She is a beautiful dog, I really like her though, and when I don't want to kill her, I want to hug her. I guess that's the way bitches are.

Here's a diff angle, lol. I've worked in peoples homes for over 20 years with their carpet. As a general rule small dogs p&p or pee and poo indoors, while most large breeds seem to have an natural desire to go outside. You will have to be honest about your mom's personality as it seems most people just can't bring themselves to be stern with "the poor little thing" I don't reccomend white dogs or dogs with any kind of ooh sound in their name in general. Dachsund's and spaniels ( esp brittany's?) are notorius p&p, some poodles, chihuahua's, and most terriers are are pretty good. Not Yorkies though. I have seen one very well behaved Bichon, the lady was strict! Also if it's cold or rains alot where you live, they can be quite hard to coax outside. There are exception's to everything, that's just what i see. Little old ladies are not notorious for keeping up with the pooch Oh and for some gross factor! The average dog produces 4-6 ounces of urine per 5 lbs of bodyweight, each day. A ten lb dog who does 1/4 of his biz indoors, leaves you about 7 gallons of urine inside each year. Believe it or not it is usually 3 to 5 years before the people start to even notice it! Removing 21 to 35 gallons of dehydrated urine is no small feat btw.

I have a "Westie" named Kasper, a boy. He will be 3 years old on 12/29/07. He has worked out wonderful! But, as a puppy, he did the normal puppy stuff, then he got fixed, he is much calmer now.

Bichons are great, active enough for walks, but fine with hanging out. I don't have one, but I like them. My cocker spaniel is a really great dog. If he can be near me, and chase the ball once in awhile, he's perfect. Never has accidents in the house, is quiet most of the time, good manners. I have a dachshund who is the spawn of satan. He's noisy, demanding, potties in the house, eats his food in 1.5 seconds, chases the cats, terrorizes the cocker... *sigh* We're getting ready to go for round 2 with the dog trainer.
