Restrangled, I haven't had this breed, but when we moved down to Georgia (college town), nearly every college girl in our apartment building had a Shitzu (sp?) Our current landlord is in her 70's and has one too. A nice little lap dog, friendly, good with the kids and barks when I ring her doorbell to alert her and then quiet the rest of the time. She has everyone pet her, and the ones that we would see at the apartments were always quiet and friendly, letting the kids walk up and pet them. I really like them. Hope that helps. Oh, I'm not sure, but I am assuming they must be good company and okay on their own during the day, seeing it was always single college girls that seemed to get them when they left mama and daddy's house. (I thought it was sweet of their parents to provide a warm comforter for their girls!)
Small dog Owners, best breed?

Personally, I like small breeds that are mixed with miniature poodle or Bishon Frise. Yorkie-poodle, Cock-a-poo, Peke-a-poo, etc... They are usually very smart and they do not shed. However, they DO need to be groomed every 6-8 weeks.
Some small dogs, such as Jack Russell Terriers and Fox Terriers, can tend to be a little too hyper for an older person. They need a lot of entertainment and exercise. They also shed quite a bit.
Schnauzers and Schnauzer mixes are great, because they don't shed either, but they are a little more rambunctious than some older folks want to deal with.
There are exceptions to every rule, of course. Good luck with your search! There are lots of great dogs at the shelters. You might call and see what's available.

I love pugs! Their eyes crack me up everytime. Also boston terriers...they make me lol too. It's the "crazy eyes" (How I Met Your Mother reference). I also love bull dogs...they don't want a lot of exercise.

Corgies are great dogs their is the cardigan and the pembroke breed. Here in canberra it is illegal to dock the tails of the pembroke dogs but the welsh corgie has a tail.

Mrs. Williams and I agree: for comedy, personality, funny looks, and stupidity disguised as cocky intelligence you can not beat a dachshound...although I can not spell the name!
V PS: Also, short haired, easy to bath.

I have a Jack Russell and Chihuahua mix. She's kinda big to be a mix of 'em both. (See picture, that's me and her :)) She was the runt of 12 puppies. Surprisingly, she is pretty calm most of the time. She's a good guard dog and tries to keep my son in line. LOL. When she goes outside she runs laps around the house which is where, I guess, she let's out that tiny dog energy. Other than that she could sleep for 22 hours. 1 hour for play, 1 for eating, and drinking. I never had a dog as smart as she is. My stories about her are quite unbelievable..LOL. My favorite is when she was about 2, I was watching the Discovery Channel, a documentary about wolves and dogs. She watched the entire show, I swear. And then she decided she was going to be the "Alpha" dog of the house. The two other dogs (not mine) really know she is the boss and she still lets them know it.

The best is a Cock-a-Poo (half cocker spaniel half poodle)
Male
Top reasons why.
1. Intuitive like a poodle. Read owners very well
2. Cocker loyalty and enjoying attention
3. THEY DON"T SHED!
