Some things are definitely better, but we often only look at the bad things. Life span is better ...................but we have had worst times as history proves,,someone said "history soon becomes a stranger
Good points Gayle. I like to call what you refer to as historical myopia.
worldwide seems up.

In agreement with 5go'sperception, many experts opine that the U.S. reached it's pinnacle decades ago.
Since you asked, the Mayan calender runs out in 2012. Speculation is that there is a planet on a 10, 000 year orbit around the earth when it comes closely past earth the gravitational pull will cause earths magnetic poles to shift and we will have a period replicating the flood of Noahs day. The heard will be thnned and things will start to get better.
Any time there is a change in the status quo, established vested interests try to resist the changes, which creates turmoil. As the system finds a new equilibrium, the momentary instability is perceived as "going downhill". Technological advances have made life vastly better than in previous centuries. Yet each new advance brings its own problems which demand solutions. 110 years ago, automobiles were considered a desireable development, as they were expected to solve the problem of horse manure which plagued large cities. These piles bred flies, which spread disease. And as they dried up and were ground to dust by the wheels of passing wagons, the dust blew around and got into peoples eyes and throats. Autos pretty much did away with that problem, but they brought their own problems, and actually changed society. Many people who had lived prior to the advent of the automobile longed for the "good old days" before cars "ruined" everything. A similar account can be given for almost any innovation, be it electricity, radio, television, medical advances, airplanes, nuclear energy, birth control, DNA research, electronics, all have forced changes in society, which some perceived as a negative change. And in truth, some developments have been APPLIED in a negative manner. Changes in the way a nation earns money also end existing jobs, and create new jobs. 100 years ago, the U.S. was the leading manufacturing economy in the world, now other nations manufacture most of the goods consumed in the U.S., too bad if you worked in manufacturing for one of the old companies such as Packard, Hudson, Studebaker, Schwinn, Columbia, Zenith, Quasar, RCA or any number of companies which either closed their doors completely, or farmed out their manufacturing to Asia. Also, sometimes there seems to be a misstep, such as (IMHO), the Bush presidency. Yet overall, even with debacles like this, the progress of society as a whole has been ever upward. For every job lost to some overseas company, new jobs have been created. And overall, more people have jobs now, at least, among those who actually want to work. Would anyone really wish to live as an average person in 1750? How about 1500? Anyone want to live in 1250? (I know I wouldn't do that again, as some relatives were actually burned at that time, no kidding!). Just as the world of "right now" is, overall, vastly better than the world of 1750, the world of 2250 will be vastly better than the world of "right now". These are actually exciting and interesting times to live in, to witness the changes taking place which are going to make the world of tomorrow so much better for future generations.
Gaiagirl has stated it fairly accurately, imo. The usa is still the most creative national entity. Also, much of the american tech and innovative ideas has/is allowing other countries to ride on it's coattails, so to speak. However, the usa is having a struggle in some areas and other large countries such as china, india and brazil are making tremendous advances. The overall effect is a trend towards an equalization on a global scale. The future will be interesting.

There is nothing indicating that there will be an improvement by leaps and bounds in the state of the world. The western world is much more civilised now than it used to be but coming to this point out of the barbarous and ignorant middle ages was a slow and painful process. Such things don't happen suddenly.
GiaG,

Are we really better off than say the time before we became civilized? Better off now with big governments that have big militarys? When we first started to settle in villages and became agricultural, than before we were hunter-gatherers? With the empire building of tyrants, who have not winced at the shedding of much blood? The big question is will we survive as a species, when we have the ability to destroy all human life with the push of a button? There are no guarantees, remember species by the thousands have become extinct, why should we conclude we are any different, that we are somehow more a noble or special species better than those that already have become extinct? I think wishful thinking can and does blind us to think we will always get better. We are just insignificant when we look at the vastness of the cosmos, but in our own selfcentered thinking we tend to think we are better than the rest of species that have come and gone. Is it not dellusional and unwarranted to think we will always get better? . All that being said, I hope we do evovle to greater understanding and comprehension, to see the folly of following leaders, and transcend our narrow mindedness, which manifest itself thru nationalism, racism, and religion. Only then will we be able to live on this planet for billions of years until our sun become a red giant.I hope we do evovle to greater understanding and comprehension, to see the folly of following leaders, and transcend our narrow mindedness, which manifest itself thru nationalism, racism, and religion.
AMEN BROTHER!
