Well right now on Statewide TV is video of my son hitting a home run in the playoffs against his old teammates. (He doesn't play for his local HS team, but goes to a private school 1/2 hour away.) But in the end we came up just short 8-7.....he's had a great run in baseball. One State Championship (age 14), runners up in the State twice (age 15,16), 5 District Championships(age 10,12,14,15,16). My last season coaching him we went 21-0, he once struck out 17 of 18 for a 1 hitter and overall too many pitching victories to count. Two home runs this year.

But on a lovely sunny day it all came to an end today. He's been the captain the last two years and a four year varsity player and today, as always was a real leader.

Dads, play catch with your son every time they ask. Not every other time, every time.

(and remember, winning is more fun, but not more important...)

....I wished I had gotten the home run ball. I have a sock drawer full of baseballs with the details of the game and the first goal puck as well....

Hey that's great! I can tell you're proud of him. My oldest sister was really good at baseball. She used to hit more balls on the roof of the school than anyone else. When we'd play at home, we'd throw the ball and then duck because man could she ever wallop that thing hard and far. One memorial experience of her playing baseball is when she was newly married and we were having a congregation picnic at the park. She got up to bat and all the brothers who were playing field all smirked and moved up. After all, it was only a woman at the bat right? Anyway, she walloped it super hard and it went sailing over their heads, way down to the other end of the park. They just stood there in shock that there was a sister who could hit the ball farther than any of the brothers. I'm suprised she was PR'd.

Will he be playing college ball? Sounds like he has the talent.

He is going to a college for engineering, no baseball there.

God I'm going to miss going to these games. I'm so happy that he got a home run in his last game...Ted Williams did that too.

Mary - you and your sister sound like those two gals in that movie "A League of their Own". Did she ever get to play on a school team?

Hmmm.....you know what, I'm not sure. She's 6 years older than me and we weren't at the same school so I can't say whether she was or not. I do know that the coach wanted her to consider going into women's baseball as a career, but seeing as The End was coming in '75, take a guess as to what the response from the elders were on that.

That's too bad. While my son is disappointed today, he's got so many good memories and especially confidence from this sport.

By the way at class night last night he was honored with graduating with Honors - 4 year average of 93 and a physics and English award. All this at the most stringent HS in our State.

I'm definately taking your advice UnConfused. And thanks for sharing those wonderful memories with us! My son is only 3, but I've had his new glove and ball ready and packed away in his closet since the week after he was born! I'm hoping next year I can start tossing it to him! I always loved baseball as a kid, but mom was a devout JW and playing any kind of organized ball was out of the question for me.
