It's truly amazing what they're told now. There were many people who sold off everything back then - and it damn sure wasn't due to being too materialistic. They did what they thought Jehovah wanted them to do - preach full time until the end came. They felt a sense of urgency that came directly from the society. I lived it - I remember it. The ones who sold everything were looked upon as "spiritually strong - with a special love for Jehovah". They put their faith in Jehovah - that he would provide for them. The sad thing was - that when Armegeddon didn't come, these people didn't have any way of taking care of themselves in their old age - and the society wasn' t going to step up and supplement them. It's a real eye opener what you said about what the older witnesses say now about what happened back then. It's no wonder they're told to stay off the internet - they don't want to take the chance that any of them will read what actually happened back then. It was a big major deal - I remember the assembly when it was announced - everyone was dumbfounded - during the intermissions - the place was a buzz - everyone talking about 1975 - teenagers wondering if they'd graduate high school or should just quit now - it was the most exciting thing that had happened to them! Young people were encouraged not to get married, unless they felt they just couldn't stay "clean" (without sex) and young married people were encouraged to put off having children until after Armegeddon - so they could pioneer also without the burden of raising children. I knew couples that were "waiting until the new system" to have kids - then I heard later - after 10 or 15 years, that they finally had had a child.

Dawn, your memory is correct as I remember all the same events and attitudes on my side of the country also.
It constantly amazes me how the society has been able to convince so many that the prediction was simply read into by the brothers and sisters. They jumped ahead! My a##!
Memories like these make me so angry and sad at the same time. -

Good. ..I'm glad to hear that other people remember it as I do. It is very sad as you say, but true nonetheless, no matter what they try to say about it now.

Guest with Questions
I remember 1975. My parents, who became witnesses around 1971, talked about it and I was scared at the time. I was still fairly young (about 22 and out of the house) and for years I didn't want anyone talking about any end of the world stuff. My mother now denies it.
It never occurred to me till this thread why my parents might have sold their house here in Canada and went to the States, basically living like gypsies, never knowing where they were for months at a time. My two youngest brothers hardly went to school during this time. We couldn't figure out what the heck my parents were doing. The possibility that Armageddon was soon coming might have persuaded them to totally give up on this system.

It's closer than the inside of your eyelid. Really, there is no better time to sell all that you have and devote yourself whole-souled to the worldwide misery work.
Really, really close! Think of something close - it's closer than that! Very close, very close indeed!
A matter of picosecons or nanoseconds, certainly not seconds or minutes.

You're COMPLETELY wrong; after over 100 years, it looks like my HQ has FINALLY learned to stop trying to date it! (You think Jesus' words woulda sunk in....!)

I like the 2034. Sounds rightish...What with all that has to happen Biblically. Great Tribulaton has most decidedly started, though.

2034 is the strongest date the WTBTS has "hinted at" Noah like work , 120 years ; 1914 +120 years = 2034
I agree. OTOH it could be argued that the work Russell started well before 1914

Just a side note on the WTS doctrine on Armageddon and "field service."
The Great Tribulation (GT) starts with the destruction of Babylon the Great (all religion except the WTS/FDS/GB/JWs.
Then field service ends; no more jws trying to get anyone out of Babylon the Great.
Satan tries to destroy all jws.
Armageddon the starts and God destroys all earthly supporters of Satan and abysses Satan and the demons for 1,000 years.
How long all this takes...............they will not commit except to say possibly, maybe, perhaps..............

LATEST PREFERRED TRANSLATIONS OF THE WORDS

There are many modern English translations of the Christian Greek Scriptures (The New Testament). How do the majority of these modern English translations prefer to render the controversial Greek word di·a·ko·ni´a for their readers? By the word "ministry," with all the dignity that the Holy Bible imparts to it. Rightly, the dedicated, baptized witnesses of Jehovah are within the Bible meaning of things to apply to their assigned Christian activity the fitting word "ministry." What, now, are these "ministers" going to do with their "ministry"? Are they going to live up to it and its obligations, or renounce it because of objections or opposing pressures? From revealed Bible prophecy we know what the alienated political authorities will do to the ministers, bishops, deacons, priests and patriarchs of Babylon the Great, the world empire of false religion. We should not blind our eyes to what is coming.

As indicated in the sign language of Revelation, the secular political powers will stop having unions of Church and State. They will break off having intimate relations with the international religious prostitute. They will unseat her from their back, strip her of her claims to royalty with its scarlet and purple, rob her of her gold, pearls and precious stones with which she has gaudily exhibited herself. From her hand they will snatch away the "golden cup" that is filled with all the unclean and disgusting things, the goblet from which she has made all the peoples drink to their becoming befuddled as if they were intoxicated. Her ornate religious buildings they will convert into places for common, secular uses, or will even burn them down after they have despoiled them of their ill-gotten wealth. Woe for the day of reckoning upon Babylon the Great during "the great tribulation"!—Rev. 17:1-18; 7:14.15
What will that future course of the political powers of the world mean for the Christian witnesses of Jehovah? This: their ministry in behalf of the interests of God’s kingdom will be rejected. No longer will they be preaching "the year of goodwill on the part of Jehovah." Even after the despoiling of Babylon the Great, they must unflinchingly carry on the proclaiming of the "day of vengeance on the part of our God."—Isa. 61:1, 2; 59:17, 18.
