No i remember paying 30p for wt and awake at the lit desk and charging 30p to cover the printing cost. There was no profit involved as far as i could tell.Differant for the pioneers i suppose.I remember getting a rebate when i reg pioneered.

How does this work now? I notice my jw is accumulating stacks of the wt's! I guess he couldn't 'place' them? I wonder where he will go with them when he runs out of his stash places as no wt lit is allowed out in the house!

Let's see now...
The Watchtower Corporation owned their own presses, right?
They had volunteer labor, right?
They manufactured their own ink? (This I'm not sure about.)
Volunteer sales (distribution).
Pulp paper.
No payments for copyright.
Huge runs at a time.
I'd bee greatly surprised if a bible cost more than a quarter to manufacture and a Watchtower magazine a penny.

I do remember that when I was little I would be very excited when I would place them and get money from people- cause I then I had money!!

The WTS have it really good not only are their products distributed by unpaid salesmen/women but they also have to buy them up front so that the losses of any of them not sold will be on them and not on the org.
The contribution method was obviously a ploy to throw the taxman off their back and it shows how money minded they are, they won't even pay a little tax to the state.

When I pioneer in the early 60's, the WT and Awake were offered for a "contribution" of 5 cents each, but I only had to pay 1 cent. Publishers paid 3 cents. One day I was working the CO's wife, she held up the magazines to the householder, he took them, then closed the door. She actually knocked on the door to demand her 10 cents.

OK: my anger level just spiked when I read the heading on the thread: here is the story:
(Tom C. is a former Bethal Printing Overseer)
I am visiting my buddy, Tom Cabeen, at his home in CT. We are setting in his living room and he is telling a story about this or that and he mentions the cost of the mags costing three and a half cents to produce in the early eighties....it was just a tid-bit fact to Tom....that was not the story....he goes on...
I sat up straight and said "Whoa...wait a minute: the mags cost HOW MUCH???"
Tom said three and a half cents.
I said we were placing them for a quarter and that was to cover the cost of printing.
Tom says it did cover the cost of printing.
I am getting torqued: But, Tom, it is a PROFIT of twenty one and a half cents.
Vernon, he asks, if you knew the cost was three and a half cents what would you have charged for the mag?
I thought: a nickle.
Vernon, Tom goes on, how much did you cong. send into the Society each month?
Couple of hundred bucks.
Tom asks: How does the Society buy the most expensive property in Brooklyn with a couple of hundred bucks? They don't. They pay millions in cash: where does that money come from? From twenty one and a half cents times 4 copies a month times 10,000,000 copies each times 12 months. And, that does not cover the profit from Bibles, books, brochures, and other odds and ends. Vernon, it is the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society INCORPERATED. It is a BUSINESS. The BUSINESS is printing and the reason a BUSINESS exists is to project itself into the future based on PROFITS.
(Guys: I was so angry at that momment I could have spit nails. This topic still (curse word ahead, again....) pisses me off to the point I want to just....I don't know what......)
But, I go on, talking to Tom, What about the little scribbled notes in the WT where the little girl sends in her milk money...I mean this little girl went without her milk and she gives it to the Society? Why don't they send back little Suzy's money and tell her to buy the playmate with no shoes or bad shoes a pair of shoes as the Society is rolling in money?
Tom smiles: We don't want to mess up appearances do we, Vernon?
000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
So, that is the story, folks. Happened four years ago. This Society is awash in money...money to the gills. And, here is the REAL (curse word ahead, again....sorry....) PISSER: These hypacritcal pieces of Spiritual Fecal Matter have the gall to say they do not pass a COLLECTION PLATE!!!
Well of course not: they have a guranteed market, a free distribution system (via our cars and feet when we were "in field service"), free laber.....and they are lying their proverbial powdered bottoms off about the whole scheme.
Liers. Liers. Decievers.
Done ranting....almost two in the morning.....
Yours in this swamp of reality,
V PS: I think a broke a rule or two listed below: Amends: I will try to do better.....

Vernon - I'm gobsmacked (but not surprised). Thieving toe rags. Information like this needs to be sent to 'key' members in all Congregations. I'm sure there's enough of us to cover the Western World, lol. Thanks for sharing, I appreciate it

Mid,
Here is another point: After Tom was booted, he checked with a large printer and found a commercial printer, making a profit, and paying all the overhead could produce the WT mag CHEAPER than the Society.
Go figure......
