    I have a collection of over 5,000 LPs. I have cassettes, mini-discs, CD's etc.

LP's are produced using what is known as the RIAA curve. The high-end is rolled off. The psycho-acoustic effect is one of smoothness without brittle overtones and "air".

Once you are accustomed to the "sound" of an LP you will find digital openess harsh at times.

But, within reason what the critic is really dealing with is the manner in which the music is produced which includes the engineering, the EQ, the compression, etc.

Any "golden-eared" tweeker can make a medium sound wonderful.

I don't mind MP3 files that are left at a bit rate of at least 325 bps.

    I prefer, however, OG VORBIS.

Hey Terry, I have an 80 gig IPod and I am really loving it. Don't really have any problems with ITunes like a lot of you guys sound like you are having. I find the biggest plus I'm getting with my IPod are all the awesome podcasts I have subscriptions for. Most of them are weekly news or special interest bits that download to my IPod and automatically delete after I have listened to them. No complaints here.

Well, to be fair, the music downloads on iTunes were at a scraggly 128kbs for the most part and that isn't good enough for my money. I just go to the iPod websites and download the files and drag and drop to my iRiver player.

The problem I have had with ITunes (I owned a 30gig video MP3 player) was a big one. My hardrive would go down and I'd have to reformat. After a crash my i.d. number wouldn't match iTunes record and they'd count off my number of separate accounts until I couldn't even play ANYTHING I'd bought and paid for!! The same is true of my daughters who can't play anything they have because of so many crashes and reformats.

Other than that, iTunes is dandy.
