I have a caller ID box that will store up to 100 numbers to block, it answers on the first ring and tells the caller, "We are not accepting your calls," and then hangs up. If someone calls a 2:00 am and it is not an emergency, I hit the reject button and they never get through again, currently I have 26 numbers blocked, I have had this box for 15 years and wouldn't have a phone without it.

WTWizard highly recommends the caller id approach. I heartily agree.

But I went one step further and dumped the land line entirely. My wife and I each have a cell phone, and we only give the number out to a few people. I asked my wife that if she has to give a number to an elder or someone else in the congregation, give them her number as I don't wish to be bothered. It works great for me. Plus, the cell phones have caller id, too. Only people you add to your contact list show up with names...all the rest are just phone numbers. Easy to weed out unknown or unexpected calls that way. We also get zero telemarketing calls.

Aye caller ID is a godsend. It always cracks me up how many people get bent out of shape when my boyfriend and I let the answering machine get it. His mother acts like it's a crime to not pick up the phone.

The JW elders only visit a JW if this serves the interests of the org they don't really care personally about the individual member though they may act as if that is the case.

I don't know if you have faded quietly but if you express doubts they may decide to take action against you. It will be like throwing pearls to the swine.

Thanks for your comments, and I do have caller ID but as you know when private name or unknown caller unknown number, that is what really pisses me off. I have stopped answering the telephone when that shows up on the screen.

Last week a guy called me and he asked me why don't you respond to your calls, and i told him two reasons. I don' t speak to anyone who is unknown and private name and numbers. He said we have an important message to relay. So I told him if your message is so important then why do you use the unknown crap and also a couple of times when I have picked up the telephone all I get is voice instructions. Well I refuse to listen to voice instructions, I don't listen to machines from companies like yours and so if you want to speak to me display your name and number and have a human being on the other end or your out of luck.

I think that made him pissed but I don't care I am fed up with all the voice stuff you are forced to listen too.

Quandry: I have no idea why this brother showed up at the hospital, he said the hospital gave him my room number and name as it was listed under JWs. I told him that is impossible as several years ago the hospital administration changed my religion from JW to an Anglican. Oh well I don't know why they gave it to me. Personally I think my ex husband told him I was in the hospital and that is why he showed up.

I have nothing to say to any elder and apparently when he called the other day I found out from my son Richard that this elder called me when I wasn't in and Richard spoke to him and told him I wasn't in. Richard is not a JW thank goodness, but we all know how persistant these pesky elders can get.

I see them in the service from time to time and if he sees me again he will probably get out of his van and chase me down the road while I am speeding down the street in my electric scooter. Now that would be a laugh.

Anyway I must leave the forum now as I am going to church and today is our church picnic. So see you in the funny papers

I don't answer unknown callers either and I let the message machine pick up and I screen my calls that way.

I'd just tell him, "READ MY LIPS! DO NOT CALL ME OR TRY TO CONTACT ME IN SOME OTHER WAY." That's me though. Everyone has a different way and tolerance.
