Sorry guys, I'm from the other camp. I return phone calls and e-mails promptly. When people don't return mine I feel they are either: very busy, did not get my message or just plain rude (depending on my experiences with this person).

I agree with jgnat. Politely spell it out to the worst offenders. That would be a kindness to them.

I don't like phones either.
At home, I rarely answer the phone but I have caller ID and an answering machine. If I don't recognize the number, I don't answer. If it's important, they'll leave a message. If I recognize the caller's number or name, I might answer depending on who it is. If I don't answer and it was important, the machine will get it.
I've noticed nine time out of ten, people won't leave a message. Therefore I can only conclude that it wasn't important and therefore there's no reason for me to call back.
I have a cell phone though I've never even come close to using up my minutes each month. It's more of a tracking device so my wife can locate me when she wants. Almost no one has that number. On the rare occasion it rings, it startles me. And then I only answer if it's my wife. Don't ever ignore a call from the wife, if you know what's good for you.

I dislike the phone. If you need to contact me, email is my preferred method. You can ask a question, get an answer and skip all the idle chit-chat.

Ha... I am proud to be the only person in my company who has voice mail turned off on his cell phone and desk phone... and you know what? No one ever misses it. I have my mobile on close to 100% of the time, and if I can't pick it up, if it's business or someone I want to talk to, I call back.
I've actually got rid of a shitty DECT cordless at home which didn't allow voicemail to be turned off permenantly (it always switched tself back on) and replaced it with one that has no voice mail.
Voicemail and answer phones are just ways of making yourself a slave to others. If they can try once, they can try until they suck seed.
