HAYDEN C. COVINGTON REPRESENTED MUHAMMAD ALI WHEN HE REFUSED TO SIGN UP FOR THE DRAFT.
COVINGTON'S ARGUMENT WAS THAT MUHAMMAD ALI WAS A RELIGIOUS MINISTER.
THIS ARGUMENT FAILED

I was drafted about the same time as Cassius Clay, alias Muhammed Ali.
At the time I was going through the court system, he was too. I was sorely disappointed that Covington defended him and not any of us JW boys who were facing prison.
By the way. Ali did not serve time for his draft situation. (I personally did 2 years in the Federal Penitentiary.)
I call that a win.

PLEASE NOTE -- Covington was NOT a WT lawyer when he represented Cassius Clay (later known as Muhammad Ali) -- he had left Bethel by then.
The source of this is the "Dr. Jennifer Henderson interview with Jerry Bergman" on the Freeminds website. http://www.freeminds.org/history/covington2.htm
And also -- Covington NEVER got $$$$ for this case. Here's a quote from the interview:
HENDERSON: I wondered what they did following his leaving [Brooklyn Bethel].
BERGMAN: I had asked her about this because he was in the news a lot because of the Cassius Clay case. He represented Cassius Clay.
HENDERSON: Right.
BERGMAN: Cassius Clay never paid him for the case. They had a falling out.
