Lots of people bake cakes out of home here. California has the most laws that no one else has even thought of!

Well people can get sick from something they eat so the state should at least make sure that if Bob has a bakey out of his home everything is sanatary, no? Same with restaurants.

Just curious, you say you have two years of college without a degree. What in, and how much more would it take to get a degree in something? JK

Art ... And I found out later that the classes from the junior college wouldn't transfer to the art school and I would have to take them over again. So the only way I could finish was to go back to that school and get an associates degree in art and for what it would be worth, the school is too far away to go back to. And yes, there should be rules that help you to know that you are eating sanitary food. I welcome them into my home. I have enjoyed the comments. Helps me be realistic about it.

So, I enrolled in cake decorating classes starting next month. What do you think of this idea. Could it work? pointers?

Umm, I'm going to need some samples to give an honest opinion here. ;-)

Try talking to someone else. They might let you take a test and avoid retaking the classes. There are way to work around what's in the books, you just might have to get approval from the dean.

Cake decorating can be both enjoyable and lucrative. I know a 'sister' who recently started doing that on the side. Of course she was faced with the classic J-dub dilemma, birthday and holiday cakes and pastries. Needless to say she has cut back on what could have been a profitable side job for her.

This brings me to my next point, make sure you mix in a few business type courses. Marketing, small business and sales can help you push along your venture. You can be the best at what you do, but you have to know how to promote yourself. Thats not mine I got it from the rich dad poor dad book.

Why not capitalize on the talents that we learned as a JW. The ability to spout lies and inane nonsense with a baffling confidence for example.

Get into advertising or marketing. Tailor made.

don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet....

my stepmom is enrolling for school to get a culinary degree (she's way older than you). it's a two year program (AA degree) and she plans on working part time in a bakery and getting hands on experience and then possibly do catering when she gets out of school.

seems like a good plan to me, especially if you love cooking and baking like she does.

I've thought about this. Maybe. We'll see. And about this financial thing -- my dad owned his own business and I worked for him since I was 12. And I work in accounting now. I'm not quite a secretary. Like the version that makes almost twice as much and is the only secretary in a retail store. So although I could definately use some more help with marketing, I am not completely unexperienced in the business field. And I just made a cake and although my decorating could use some more work, it is definately tastes better than any cake I've ever tried.

well, it's really boring, but make a business plan before you do anything else. Call the local SBA office and get an appointment with someone from SCORE (it's free) and talk over your ideas. It will help you decide whether the dream could become real. The retired executives who volunteer for SCORE are really genuinely helpful.
