That is a great picture and a rare occurence. The doe(mother) was nearby watching you. She will never be far. Fawns are born with no scent so the mother will leave them hidden very often. Because predaters can smell the mother the fawn has a better chance of survival by staying very still, hidden and away from her.
Just want to show you what we saw...

What a wonderful surprise! Did you pet it at all? I wouldn't have been able to keep myself from running out with a baby bottle, blanket, etc.

Wow! That is beautiful. I've seen lots of deer up close but never a baby one like that. Very, very sweet.

Meddling with a fawn is the worst thing you can do. As was pointed out, they are born with very little scent which helps them escape the notice of predators. (i.e. dogs running loose) If you pet it, you transfer your scent onto it and make it vulnerable to attack.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us, Merry. It sure lifts the heart.

AWESOME!
Our herd had two little ones this year, they bed down right in our front yard, but they don't let us get close like that!
That big buck running them is pretty canny.
Awesome pic, great experience,
